Breaking "IT"

Recommended Posts

Hello!

First: My English is not perfect - sorry about that.

I like the Idea of DayZ - there is much potential in it to bekome something very unique in the big world of computergames. I like the aspiration of realism, the sound and the impressive graphic - that´s really fun.

But what I really regard highly, what was the stimulus for me to buy the alpha was the psycho-social or/and the philosophical aspect. Crazy eh? DayZ is NOT just one more (maybe extra good looking) shooter and I hope, DayZ will never become a simple shooter-game.

That should be the object of this topic.

We are human survivors of a zombie apocalypse in DayZ and there are three enemys:

  • Death from starvation, sickness, weakness etc.
  • Zombies
  • Bandits

But we all know, what´s the worst one - the real threat: The other Players.

After a short while you find out that you can´t, you shouldn´t trust anybody - maybe except your friends you know in real life, you are connected with via teamspeak.

You all may have experienced that: "I am friendly" - are the last words you hear before you die.

So what did that experience automaticaly to you? You saw an other player with or without a weapon - and you fast killed him - just to protect yourself from beeing killed.

You didn´t need anything from him, you were energized, hydrated, healthy - but you killed him like a coward from behind without knowing him or his/her purposes. The effect of that:

This player you killed experienced the same thing like you before. Maybe he wasn´t a bandit or didn´t want to play one. But next time he will ACT like a simple bandit - just to protect himself or because of simple rage. This behavior, this logical (evil) system continues, it is taken to the next player that was killed - and multiplikates - and multiplikates... and will rule the whole game one time.

I call it "The IT" - players become the Zombies.

I am not talking about Survivors that rob other players - and preferably keep them alive - because they are needy. To face or do a robbery and to survive it makes it possible to get real deep in the game. You are completely robbed - but your story can continue.

Bandits are part of such a game - it would be boring without them. Bandits, cowards are realistic in that kind of world (and not only in that world).

But the absolute domination of Bandits and automatic Bandit-behaviour would turn DayZ to a simple LOOTER-SHOOTER and that would take away much of the potential and the uniqueness of this rising star in the world of games. Maybe the developers can think about that problem too.

So - if you want to be more than a Zombie - don´t let "IT" rule you! :D

"Keep the fire in your heart" - and maybe watch this movie to know, what I am talking about:

Yeah I totally agree, me and my friend was talking about this last night.

Also, your English is better than mine. And I was born in England!

The Road.. lol. Actually just watched that the other night to get an understanding of what Rocket was so interested in.

I feel that right now, its so much easier to just kill someone else and erase chance of betrayal.. Once more things are added to the game, and gun spawns and ammo become harder to find along with more engaging zombies, it will come to a point where players wont be as inclined to just murder other survivors. Surviving will have become more difficult, and players will start holding other up more often and perhaps work with others more frequently.

Yes, I thought about that too. Will more ore more dangerous Zombies force the players more to work together? Two axes are better than a single one. Single Zombies aren´t a real problem at this state of the alpha. It must become more attractive to profit from the skills of other players for your own benefit.

Ammo may become more valuable when the spawn is lower.

I like in the game that there are no high level absolute super heroes that can´t be beaten in any form.

We are all level one! :)

Only the guns makes the difference - but a man with a gun can be beaten down too by a skilled player - good aspect.

But yes, I hope there will be more teamwork - also and especially between strangers - that would honor the game.

Read the book, it's better than the film and you can read it in an hour or two easily.

I really thought about that. It may get more in-depth.

I find it odd people who kill other players are labeled "lazy", or "cowards".

I wasn't aware there was some sort of honor system for survival :/

The way I see it, why go out and spend all the time looting and scavenging when I'm much better and killing someone for their items.

That is what we call efficient :P why work harder for less when you can put in a decent amount of bandit-y effort and get a greater yield of success :D

The point of view of a bandit - I know it and you can see it this way. But when everybody follows this conclusion - DayZ will become just one more shooter I fear.

What I wanted to say ist that people with other attitudes or preferences are in a kind of way all forced to behave like bandits - when they are not able to resist "IT". :)

We all have to understand that this game is going to take some TIME to get it to the survival game we want it to be. I have had constant deaths in the 150+ hours I have played yet I have only killed at most 4 people, people who act suspicious or are in the act of killing a helpless player, we must stay strong and promote actual interaction instead of the KoS mentality. DayZ SA I think blew Deans expectations and due to the popularity of the game there is now too many people playing it, with lack of understanding that it isnt quite a game yet, it is in the very very early stages of Alpha (Sorry I hate bringing that up).

Anyways I had more to write but I guess my mind is half-fried right now as I have had no sleep and its 5:50AM. All I wanted to say is I 100% agree OP and have some faith because I believe there is more friendly's out there then we both think, and I will never let the "IT" factor turn me.. I know what type of game I'm playing and I would never play it like CoD.

Has a bit extra that you don't see in the film, like a spit roasted baby for example. Also explains a bit about other communites etc.

Read the zombie survival guide by max brooks. I knoe it isnt a dayz manual or a "real" survival guide but it can help you in dayz. The guide states that you shouldnt trust anyone you meet. It's an apocalyptic world you play in and the survivors are completely insane and would kill you without hesitation to protect them self. That is even written in the guide. You cant see from peoples noses that they are nice people or viciuous murderers. Only trust the people you know in person (you can punch them irl if they betray you :p).

But read the guide. It has some really good points you can use for dayz.

Have fun and loot safe.

When i bought the game(didnt play the mod) i thought it was all about interactions, tis not. Its deathmatch and will continue to feel like a deathmatch until Zeds are a real threat. Before i didnt KOS anyone, now i do shoot ppl in the legs and then talk to them. If they are cool i heal them, if not well...

That makes it as true as the Bro Code.

I know that it´s a game under development and it is shurely not bad for the process when players talk about their wishes and experiences like we do. The fact that so many people play it right now and pay for the alpha shows that they expect something really new and special.

Yes, I also met many nice people ingame. Let´s do it like Dirty Harry - giving everybody a chance but expecting the worst, hidden, with the Finger on the trigger. And trying to take down the really bad Ones. :D

Sounds like a shocking book but no book can be harder than reality.

The only thing I've found disappointing so far is being killed when I'm clearly not a threat.

Running across some fields last night towards a town, fairly far inland and clearly without a weapon or any decent gear someone thought I needed a bullet. Target practice I suppose.

They were a crap shot though. Took them at least 15 rounds to finally get me.

Thank you for this tip! Never heard about that. Good luck to you too in the game. :beans:

Another possibility not to KoS... :) If you are able to knock so out while he is reloading or before he can act is also possible - but... might be dangerous.

Yes, I made s.o. waste his ammo too many times. He finally shot me - to get a badly damaged hat.

And yes, I acted like a retard too once and beat a stranger to death - just because of rage.

The "IT" caught me, that´s absolutely silly - I know now. But some people kill just because of fun, to have the feeling of power or sth. They don´t even need rage for that behavior. Yes...the people are different.
