PJSleaze 111 Posted February 21, 2014 I thought I had a good idea of the map after playing the mod for over a year but I started following one of the new roads and got lost in the north without a compass for hours!I've only been playing for 2 weeks- I had no clue where I was. I'd say it took close to 2 hours to get back to anything resembling civilization. I'd run out to intersections looking for a sign... Nothing. Found a pretty cool train station up there though. iBane 381 Posted February 21, 2014 Pretty much every bit of it. FIrst thing I did to see what was different from the mods.. I have 1 thing left to explore, the mil base NW of Balota. See you all there! ;) I didn't play the mod. What were the most important differences you discovered?
kitthegreat 43 Posted February 21, 2014 Most sessions on DayZ see me more or less circle the map, or at least cross the interior a couple of times. So I'd say quite a lot compared to the coast huggers. But still a couple of small towns I haven't been too. Only yesterday I was heading through the Old Fields and found a Stone Circle on top of a hill and a Castle I hadn't seen before. Plenty left to explore still, and I haven't even been North of the train tracks much.

TheWanderingMan 170 Posted February 21, 2014 Found a lovely loot spot up north that very few seem to know about (all doors closed on highly populated servers). I intentionally stay to the fringes and only go into settlements to gather food or ammo. I prefer to play lone wolf although I do like the clan aspect of PvP which is also fun. Maybe I just like the idea of having to survive without any outside help, although I'd crumble if I was alone in a situation like this in real life. Very few people that I've met can actually be truly alone for extended periods of time.
Window Licker 504 Posted February 21, 2014 (edited) At want point do you divulge your secrets and tell everyone about the secret places you go to find loot because there is a 95% chance it hasn't been looted even on a full server? edit: Also I'd love to watch a map of player movements on a full server over 2-3 hours from a restart. Weyland Yutani (DayZ) 1159 Posted March 1, 2014 (edited) Cave do tell i didnt think they were able to do caves yet ??? or you just pulling my leg... I have found two so far. I read there are many more but have yet to find them. If anyone knows the exact locations of the northern caves I would appreciate it. tarascon 50 Posted March 1, 2014 Like the poster above me, I'm about 2 weeks old. I use DayZ DB & DayZ HQ maps. My first day was all about dieing ignobly in many ways until I read the tip that fresh spawns should get away from the coast asap and make their way inland. I did that and my entire 2nd and 3rd day was spent way up in the north looking for the NW airfield (like a typical noob). I was kitted with a fire-axe and a good amount of potables. No gun. No compass. I got lost up in the northern woodlands many times and found myself at the edge of the map more than once. I was using cloud drift and the sun as a guide but the clouds are tricky things. At one point I started running low on drinks and was starving when I dragged ass into Olsha and lucked into some food. Every time I stumbled across a town the local dead would chase me in packs and I'd totally lose my direction... When I finally blundered onto the NW airfield, I found it empty of people and killed a few zombies. I thought OH boy! I've got it made! and had visions of grand loot and gear. Nope. I was killed by a one hit wonder zombie and died. LOL. Since those fateful days, I've explored a lot and know the south and east coasts and, generally, some of the interior. I can recognize around four of the smaller towns by name and the larger towns by sight. I reckon I know about 5% of the map. Not great but better than zero... Until recently, I've run solo and stuck to the hinterlands. I managed, solo, to loot the NE airfield a few times (without server hopping) and am now helping a RL friend to do the same. Hopefully, I can guide him and we won't get ourselves killed too soon. It'll happen and that's OK. Everytime I die I've learned a little more to help me next time. rodolfoxiii 71 Posted March 1, 2014 I have no reason to explore the map since the loot that matters are always in the same places.
Ineedscoffee 464 Posted March 1, 2014 Everything that matters. That being everything up north. To hell with the south, and no, it ain't rising again.
Valdenburg 200 Posted March 1, 2014 Never saw the far north. Its just too much wip.
Santza 2 Posted March 1, 2014 43 hours played and not even much. NWAF is the farthest place from the coast I have traveled, but I don't even want to check the most northern places. Waste of time.. maybe sometime.
Weyland Yutani (DayZ) 1159 Posted March 1, 2014 It's only just occured to me today that I have explored very little of the map in the standalone compared to when I played the mod. I havent't been to the NWAF, the stranded ship, berenzino and a few parts of the central map.How much have you guys explored? We have explored most of the map. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiQ263Ixj7A
