and how do you get on it? I seem to remember on the mod there was a side chat, ive been able to send messages to what came up as a `direct message` but as of yet ive seen no chat.....or is this intended, as in you can only speak to people in your range etc? as someone who plays as a lone wolf it would be nice to banter with other players once in a while lol

Afaik side chat was only added on modified servers. It wasn't supposed to be part of the game.

No side chat. The walkie talkies have a 2 km range or so, for voice chat, not sure if they work with direct chat. You have to be on the same channel as the other party or parties. You also have to put a battery in and turn them on.
