So where is Chernarus meant to be?

So I know Chernarus is based off some part of the Czech republic but it's an island right? So we can throw away this silly theory that everything should be Czech and instead we should be creating the islands own fiction. Now a downcast Eastern Europeanish island could realistically only be somewhere in the black sea or off the Eastern Coast of Russia. I'm sure others have given this much more thought but if it was in the black sea it is unlikely the Yanks would pay a visit. Off the Eastern Coast of Russia,that makes some sense.

Where do you think this island realistically would be and should we be simply making it Czech because that's the easy unimaginative thing to do or should we be developing its own independent fiction?

Near Russia.  Or part of it or something.  If you play the "campaign" in Arma 2 or 3, they go over it and show like world map zooms of it.

Chernarus is loosely based on Georgia, with South Zagoria being South Ossetia irl.

The Green Sea is something like a mix of the Black Sea and the Persian Gulf. (As Karzeghistan = Kuwait)

The topology of the land is almost identical to a region in the Czech Republic between Prague and the German border.  The ocean is actually a river in real life.

Chernarus is located in the Green sea, which is what I can only assume to be in Central Russia. Karzegistan borders Kazakhstan, Takistan borders Karzegistan, and such. The OFP islands are in the Baltic sea, from what I remember. Chernarus is actually much bigger than what we get to play on, as shown in the map above (about 10,000 sqkm, roughly the size of Kuwait or Belgium). Fun fact: There is a road sign in Kamenka, showing that Miroslavl is 5km down the road off the map.

Terrain reminiscent of Czech Republic, shape apparently analogous to Georgia, and the buildings and environment remind me of Belarus honestly. Either way, we seem to have the post-soviet state part down.

There are so many conflicting things to tie down the "in game" location of Chernarus. For example the map showing it on the coastline of the "Green Sea" which is clearly meant to be the Black Sea however the map also shows a border with Russia which isn't possible considering the way the coastline runs down the East and South. You could maybe argue that it's on the coastline between Sochi and Anapa, possibly at Novorossiysk, I would like to put the argument for it being on the Western coastline of the Caspian, possibly near Makhachkala. For every argument you could give for one place there are two or three that counter it, however the landscape, the flora and fauna, and the likeliness of lawlessness that Dagestan would provide seems to ring truer to me than that of the Black Sea.

 

 

Let's just ignore the fact that in Arma2 you depart from a US carrier. Something that is never going to be in the Black or Caspian Sea for two different but obvious reasons.. ;)

Just google "real life chernarus" the pictures of the buildings are astonishing. I always just thought the devs made shitty houses on purpose. Really quite amazing and lifelike
