Ping and Bandwidth Understanding

Recommended Posts

I understand the concept of "ping" in the Player Status screen (generally the lower the better), but I do not understand what the "bandwidth" numbers represent.  If someone can direct me to more information, I would be much appreciated.

Incoming Information / Outgoing Information / Latency

Do you want to know this for hosting purposes or are you just interested, because you're a normal player?

If you're just a normal player, then: Don't worry about it.

It doesnt matter why he wants to know something what matters is he wants to learn so please do not discourage this.

He is asking a question and is being legit and wanting to learn. It is always handy to know about this part, due to any lag/server problems might come up in due course. We used to do this on Counter Strike keeping the net_graph window open. So we knew if we was losing any packets from/to the server at all.

You guys....

I didn't say that because I wanted to discourage him, I said that because it's a topic that's not really easy to understand and if he's just a normal player he will never have to know nor will he be able to get any information out if it. You guys clearly don't seem to know, what it means in the context of ARMA / BIS games, as you've proven in your own posts, but here you go:

Have fun reading about 20 pages on information you will never need.

Thanks for the links and explanation.

I am a "normal" player and have no need for information pertaining to server hosting, etc...  But I do appreciate the information (even though I may not read all 20 pages of it).

My reason for asking is because my "bandwidth" is usually MUCH higher than other players.  Where most folks' hover around 250-750, mine will be over 1,000.  Last night, I was even in the 15,000 range for a bit.  My brother's bandwidth is also a little higher than other people (on average), but we rarely see any lag between us (he plays from Texas, and I play from North Carolina).

Anyway, I hope that frames my question a little better, and I think that you have provided me the answer.

Do you experience any lag-issues whatsoever? What does your ping say? Do you have the funny yellow or red chain? If so, it will show you "Desync".

There's literally no information whatsoever you can get out of the "Bandwidth" as a player.

For a couple of minutes last night, as my bandwidth was 15,000, I had a ping of less than 60 and no desynch (nor yellow or red chain), however, I was having issues accessing inventory and my movements were not correctly registering to my brother (i.e. which weapon i was carrying, going prone, etc...).  It cleared after a few minutes and we continued on the same server for another four hours or so, but my "bandwidth" rates dropped over time from the 15,000 range to 10,000 to 5,000 and finally settled at around 1,000.

I wasn't sure if the bandwidth meant anything, so I thought I'd ask.  Since it seems to be server-side information, then I will ignore it.  Thanks again for the info.

No problem. And as for your actions not syncing properly - that's a Bohemia-wide problem. Any MP game has that problem. ARMA 2 suffers from it - it's a bit better on ARMA 3, but it's fairly normal. I would just put it into the category of "Alpha" rather than searching for a problem on your end

Can't find the video right now, but there have been a lot of complaints about it seeming like other people would be running through walls, because of the problematic network-code.
