How to pick up things? Middle mouse button or enter are the standard controls if im not mistaken.

How to find a server that works? I usualy filter 'dayz de' and ill find around 7 great german servers with 30-70 ping (i live in sweden).

Heya! Welcome to DayZ!

Best start is going to the new player discussion and checking some of the topics there, it helped me a lot at the start. No shame in reading them this game is about survival after all!

Basics are this, movement is WASD, with Q and E being used to look around corners. Z makes you go prone (lie down), X makes you crouch, less visibility and sound generation for zombies to see you. And C is for standing up, most speed on foot, massive sound and visibility generation for zombies to spot you, do NOT use this around zombies!

On the numerical bit of your keyboard if you press Enter you will go into 3d person mode, makes a it bit easier to walk around, check for zombies etc. (this is sometimes turned off on server, generally the veteran ones)

If you double tap ALT you will switch to mouse look when in character, you can look around with the mouse but it locks you into a single direction for movement, repeat double tap to get out of it.

Double tap shift between running and walking.

Switch chat channels with < and >, while press / to start typing in it.

Thats it for movement and camera.

Press G to go into the backpack, this is the main screen where you will eventually see a main weapon like a rifle and axe and below that the pistol slot with its own inventory space next to it that will only hold bandages and pistol clips. Below that is the utility belt, your flashlight will be in there already and other items you will find like the combat knife and matches and the map etc.

On the left of the backpack you will see a text representation of whatever is in your pack, so you should be seeing bandage, flashlight and painkillers there already.

Below the main hand/weapon slot is an icon that looks like a backpack, if you double click that you will go into the pack, notice that the text on the left switches to coyote pack and probably looks like this.

Coyote Pack 8/8

This means that in that backpack you have 8 empty slots you can use to put stuff in. The backpack takes anything, so you can put anything in there, pistols and rifles though take a considerable amount of slots to carry in a pack so use space wisely.

Thats pretty much it for item management, now this is where we throw you into the deep water. Unfortunately your generation starts without a gun, so unlike us vets who had it easy starting out you are pretty hardcore already!

Check barns, anything with doors open. Check houses with a scrutinizing eye for open doors and windows where you can see trough into the house itself, you can enter those! Loot piles can be anywhere, if you see a little heap of items walk over to it and press G, or middle mouse. If you see a sort of round icon with arrows in a circle with a weapon in the middle press G and not middle mouse, middle mouse makes you pick the item up but in most cases your pack will be full and you will exchange good stuff for bad stuff that is on a zombies corpse like a tin can for a can of food. Axes dont count atm, just press middle mouse if you want to pick one up.

Server wise, i have the filter set to dayz and i join servers with atleast half full population or above, servers that are empty usually have some sort of error going on preventing people to fully log in. I generally filter on ping, while joining europe servers during day time play sessions and switching to american servers when the EU servers start going dark.

That's sort off the basics, i could write 8 pages or more with stuff i have learned to stay alive. But this will have to do!

I don't envy you starting out for the first time with this patch, good luck and be carefull in the city's!

You might like to try 6launcher, there's a link to it from the download page. Simplifies installation/updating and gives you an easy server browser to join games from. I've rarely had to spend more than a few minutes looking for a low ping server to join.
