Avoid Combat Logging

Recommended Posts

A few simple ideas to avoid combat logging problem.

When you try to log off, you simply can't if there are other players nearby a certain radious (100m, 200m or 500m for example, to be defined) and you have to find a safe place to log off (it's like going to sleep, in a zombie apocalyptic world you choose very carefully where to sleep, certainly you don't go to sleep when there are unknown menaces nearby).

Example:

I'm in the airfield looting, i'm alone, i hear footsteps, there are players outside my building or room or whatever, they are coming, i get afraid, i don't want to fight and die, i want to log off. I can't because of this feature, so i have to face the situation in whatever way i want, so i can for example:

- Hide and wait for this players to go away, then log off if i have to.

- Face and fight the player/players

- Run for my life away from them, then log off if i have to when i'm alone

Very simple and very effective in my opinion.

In the same way, when i try to log in to a server, i can't simply log in near other players and kill them. I have to either wait for other players to go away from my "radious" or spawn to a safe zone outside the "hot area" i'm in.

Example:

i want to log in, but there are players near the position on the server i want to log in. So i can wait for them to go away and spawn (automated from the game) or spawn directly to a safe zone (imagine it as a spawn point outside the airfield, or city, or whatever, with no enemies in the radious, to prevent logging scams). Place this safe zone around the map shouldn't be a problem, especially in the "hot areas" like airfields and big cities.

Notice that with the previous feature you are forced to log off out of "hot areas" and in safe places most of the times, so it reduces drastically the log in problem too.

Again, simple and effective.

Now let's analyze the possible problems of using this feature, and how to resolve it:

1. I'm playing with friends and i want to log off near them.

Possible solution: the game can simply have a team system, so he can recognize a player in your team as friendly and don't consider him when trying to log you off.

2. I can use this feature to know if there are other players nearby.

Possible solution: You try to log off, you get a confirmation message, then you are logged out. In this way you don't know if you can log out until you really log out. When you log out, you can't log in again in the same server for like 15-20 or 30 minutes (to be defined by the server owners i think). Obviously this is not the case for technical disconnections.

3. I can shut off pc/internet/electricity and log out

Possible solution: Really? We are at this level? I suppose so.. Maybe if you disconnect in this way, having other players in your radious, you suffer a disconnection penalty, like temporary ban from the server or such. I know it can happen to anyone (blackouts and such) but think about it. The possibility you disconnect for a problem like this having other players around (remember, not teammates but other players) is minimal in my opinion, and even if it happens a temporary ban is a small price you pay to eliminate combat logging problems from DayZ. You can simply change server or wait a few hours or whatever the ban can be. Also, you get flagged, so players who abuse of this type of disconnection can risk a permanent account ban.

Let's discuss it all togheter, also post other possible problems or solutions or variations.

Let's wipe out combat logging from DayZ for a better, more rewarding experience!

There is already a system in place that makes your character stay in-game for 30 seconds after logging out, thus forcing you to find a safe place to log out.

As for logging in again and server-hopping: If you log out of a session that has lastet less than 30 minutes, you have to wait up to 5 minutes before you can log back in.

It may need a bit of tweaking as the game moves on, but for now it is pretty solid.

Nice to know that... atm combat logging is a pain in the @$$ for fair DayZ players

I personally never cared about combat logging. If they get scared and they log out they are doing me a favor. The only problem I saw with combat logging is that if they could log on again moments later they could probably catch me off guard. The wait 30 seconds feature is cool anyway. If you are caught in a stupid position you kind of deserve to fight back or get killed. Every time I got killed was because I got bored of doing everything perfect and got sloppy. One second of sloppiness is all it takes to get killed. If you can force a stalemate the other guy has no option than to walk away and let you walk away. I just hope they never introduce homemade grenades or this is going to turn into Battlefield.

It's not only combat, it's also looting. People goes in looting areas, loot, change server, loot again, change server, loot again. This is ridicolous. And maybe you travel half map to get in that place, watching carefully every corner just be shot  by a guy that just logged in in the room you were previously in...

Don't worry about that. Right now there is not much else to do than that. The server hopping is going to die once the private hives are rock solid and they even make the server world persistent. By then, you can hop all you want but you would be starting all over again.

You're trying to hard by thinking of different systems to stop combat logging. What we have right now (30 or something seconds of your character staying in-game is fine, although I'd prefer a 30 seconds timer but being active, so in danger you can cancel it. + in-game character staying variant in case of crashes, alt+f4 etc).

As to you logging in idea, it's terrible for a very simple reason. You logged out on an airfield, you log in outside and you immediately know that someone is there. That's unacceptable. What we have right now is fine, could use some minor tweaking but we're fine.

Yeah this 30 seconds thing can work against combat logging, and as Corto was saying server hopping will be simply wiped out by world persistent servers.
