Server Hopping and why the current doesn't work

Recommended Posts

As of now, you can still combat log but joining back into a server you get a certain amount of time to wait, which I assume will increase the more servers you try to join...this just doesn't make sense.

You still give the ability to bandits to wreak havoc on unsuspecting people, loot and log immediately. They get the loot and I am sure they don't care about waiting 2 minutes to join another server to rinse and repeat. It doesn't give any advantage to players who aren't bandits/ trying to find a server that actually works to play on.

This morning I have tried 3-4 different servers, which I have had 40 ping and under and the server had 60 ping and under(the last server I joined I had 11 ping and the server had 40 and I lagged the most there, to the point I froze in place and couldnt even alt f4 out), both of those should be fine to play on. Well they weren't so I had to leave the server due to insane lag and join another, where I would have to wait 2-3 minutes to join in only to find out it was more laggy than the last.

Several other games have a system like this but opposite, logging out takes 10-15 seconds, joining a server is just like what it used to be, in almost immediately. That will actually bring a change to server hopping, having to take extra time to find a safe place to log out instead of being able to log out in a flash.

Your wrong.

When they "log out immediately" as you say, even though they aren't playing the game any longer, their character stays on the server for 30 seconds. They can no longer just "poof", log out and disappear. Therefor if they tried to ambush, loot and log out... they would now just sit there for 30 seconds without any control or view over their character, thereby making it a very poor choice to make in a combat situation.

I don't believe you have a firm grasp on how things are currently working.. I hope my explanation helps.

They have also had some issues with their database and some critical bugs, to which they have been hotfixing. I would give it a few hours and try again.

Well I dont believe that's true since I have been playing with my friend this morning and each time he has logged out after me, my character disappears off the server when I tell him I am logging off the server, and vice verse when he log's before me and I can clearly see him leave.

...and if what you say is true, why would they have my character there for 30 seconds with no control or view, so someone can kill me and I wouldnt know? That doesn't make any sense

It's quite simple, you combat log and your character is left in game so whoever you have cb logged on can kill you or at least attempt to. So make sure you log out in a safe place.

Ya I get the concept, but it takes nothing for a zombie to aggro from what seems like unlimited range, and to have no view or control for my character for 30 seconds seems to be absolutely ridiculous considering no where is safe, so to be penalized for doing nothing (bad connection) is bullsh*t

You should have said, "You're wrong."

lol that's such bullshit. So many places are safe, you obviously just don't understand what "safe" means.

heh.. everyone always goes for the Your and You're thing.. honestly though, its not always lazyness that causes it, I have mild dislexia and that one catches me regularly.. Its why i like the txt shortened "UR" .. easier to just piss everyone off with that ;)

As for the combat logging, it would work in a perfect world where everyone has high speed internet, a computer which isn't 2 years old and borderline requirements, with servers that are run within a km of my local exchange... but for now it doesn't work. I'm hesitant to log in after all these lag issues the last few days, because I really don't want to die over the fact the server i log into (that looks ligit on the ping screen) lags me so bad i can't even activate my weapons.... instant zombie chow. I noticed too, that before the update, i logged out where there wasn't any Zombies, but when i tried to relog multiple times, i could hear a "new zombie" near by... making my safe place within zombie detection. No where is "safe" in this game

No where is "safe" in this game

my point is, people always exaggerate how easy it is to die when complaining about the 30 seconds where your char is still in game. It's utter nonsense, although it would be nice if the servers were more stable.

Ya because logging off in a forest, miles away from any town and still aggro'ing a zombie from basically out of no where is the safest I can get...and yes it's happened.

If they want something that will work, they can keep the 30 second time period, but at least have it so we can see whats happening so we can cancel the log out and kill what ever is about to attack us...like I said this penalizes everyone regardless of being a bandit or not.

It's terrible.  Last night I had several app crashes that kicked me out and eventually I was up to almost 5 minutes on the reconnect delay while trying to reconnect to the same damn server every time.

Today I logged in, was on a Hardcore server for about 10 seconds and then got the 'you haven't received a message in so many seconds' and after 60 seconds just disconnected so I could reconnect.  Now I"m stuck waiting almost 5 minutes for ONE disconnect.

BAD implementation.

I have to agree. The fix for server hopping is loot respawns, but that is a ways down the road. The 30 second logout works great but for now the five minute timer makes the game unplayable for people with less than perfect internet connections. Sometimes it takes me a few tries to find a server that I get a good connection on. Now it takes me 20+ minutes sometimes just to get started. Put the respawn timer back like it was and wait for the actual fix so we can all enjoy and help test the game.

At this moment, with the server instability that is going on  the game is unplayable, I have no problems joining a server, I am able to play for maybe 3 minutes before the lag sets in and I get the lowest FPS I ever seen in any game...and because of the 5 minute wait after logging off a game, I'm not going to wait 5 minutes to get into a server to find out I can't play.

I feel bad for people with crap connections.

They ARE working on respawn loot timers, chill.

The problem they were having dealt with loot respawning and other loot being on the ground in other places. After a while this caused massive lag and servers would crash.

So yeah, I will happen but give it time.

Question, this hasn't happened to me, so I'm not sure how it works.  When you log out, you go inactive and sit down in game, but your software client closes and you don't see what happened to you over the next 30 seconds.  If someone comes along and DOES kill you, then when you start the game back up you have nothing on you right?  Is there any indication what happened?  If a zombie got you or a player?

At this point in time, if it happens, when you log back in, it just says "you have died." Atleast that's what happened to me.

loot respawn will only fix servers having to be reset every so often.

To combat hopping, you need to make the spawn locations unknown.

This measure will also make for a more interesting loot run.

Itll be like a box of chocolates; you never know what youre going to get. If anything.

Server hopping will die once the player and the world lives only inside the server. There's no ultimate server hopping solution while we wait for private hives. So for now, I would suggest everybody relax and enjoy the ride.
