Sonic-NKT 38 Posted February 7, 2014 well i only play on nighttime in low populated servers... because of the gamma/cloud exploit... I really like the night because it just gives a really different feeling to the game and it gets much creepier... and you are afraid to turn on your flashlight because maybe you are not alone.but i was killed a few times on night servers allready and im 90% sure those used the exploit.... Well its a alpha but all players should play with the same influences from night, bloodlos or health loss.... its one of the big things imo that should be fixed...
DeatHTaX 1217 Posted February 7, 2014 I quietly push through the abandon town, I know they are here, they are every where since the infection took hold I shouldn't be here but driven by hunger I push on. I see some poor wretch standing swaying in the road silently, I take a breath and move slowly behind her. I hear the sound of a foot scuff on the gravel, "was that me?" I looks around careful not to move too much. Then it happens the blood curdling scream I turn to see him looming over me mindlessly attacking I try to run but now she is in on it along with a half dozen others that I'd crept past. This is how a I die a feast for the infected, I wonder will there be enough left of me to become one of them..... Daytime: lolz running past the zombies you can't catch me Night play can be fun, but at the same time I currently do not play night because turning the gamma and brightness right up ruin's the experience, but is a must in order to stay competitive with the other night time players. Aside from the obvious correction to the gamma exploit I have found that I tend to have a black line and for me to see anything I need to have my light on (not very stealthy) or have it silhouetted against the horizon. Ive seen this image floating about from a reddit poster but it was a little too bright for my liking night need's the darkness but not so much I can't even see my hand's. How do you feel about this situation? do you just gamma up and roll out? is this pic too dark/not dark enough?"Sweet Mother, sweet Mother, send your child unto me, for the sins of the unworthy must be baptized in blood and fear." Your clouds are turned off, CHEATER!!!!! :P
Window Licker 504 Posted February 7, 2014 Depends on the motivation's of the player I guess Night time, It's dark, hard to see you can pass 30 ft from a zombie and not know, only to have it come back and bit you later say if you accidentally aggro a few and try to run, Every time you turn your flashlight on your setting a beacon off to anyone in the area, it's tense even when you hear something, you wonder is that a Z or a player. It add's a lot imho but like many have said until they fix the gamma exploit, the choice is be an exploiter myself or play at a disadvantage.
CS14 133 Posted February 7, 2014 Would love to see a night system somewhat like the screenshot in the first post, maybe a tad bit darker at most. Until then, avoiding night servers as it's practically unplayable.

xRann 126 Posted February 7, 2014 1pp at night is thrilling. I used to mess with gamma to even the playing field but a few patches ago something changed and night, no matter what settings I alter, is just fuckin' night. Depending on the area I usually have a good 5-10m visibility, sometimes more or less. I rarely if ever use a light source. Terrain plays a huge part on visibility too, open fields and some parts of the forests are significantly brighter and easier to see in. Urban areas, with no lights, are generally the darkest. I tend to abandon urban scavenging unless I'm fresh and head for some of the smaller towns/remote military areas. Only been in a few firefights at night, mostly one sided. Stalking is fun, good ambushes too. I don't think I was the only one affected recently because I've stalked very close to a few people and was completely unseen. Whether it looks right or not doesn't matter to exploiters. All that matters is that they can see you in pitch black darkness from 200m away
Feenix 0 Posted February 8, 2014 I usually put gamma up to make it through the woods in under 2 hours.......But since I patched I see nothing, if I am under a street light that's fine, but beyond it is pitch black, my friends could see but had to put gamma up, I put my gamma up and still nothing. The only reason I know I am on the road is because I can hear my foot steps, torch went goodbye along time ago as got annoyed at getting hunted by bandits on every night server.Even with the known "cheats" there is no difference. I can see the outline of things against the horizon which looks cool but......yeah i'm not at the horizon.

dallas 5195 Posted February 8, 2014 I know what you mean, you need to have certain setting to allow the gamma exploit to work. The fact that it doesn't work on particular setting is an indicator that this can be fixed so the gamma can't be exploited in game. I don't remember but I thought I had to turn clouds on to make that work. But never so dark that I can't see my hands, before I played with the clouds I literally could only see the horizon, with stars and everything below was black, not even a hint of anything there. In the pic I posted there is actually street lights but I felt I could see too much of the characters so I dimmed it down, for a full night without a moon, I'd say a bit darker still. But then a full moon that is actually pretty bright although not nearly what can be achieved via clouds and sliders. From my experience night is a bit broken, I'm not saying it's completely screwed just need some loving and the gamma/brightness/clouds exploit dealt with to make it a more attractive and fair playing environment. If there's no lights, how can you see anything but black matter? The only star light that makes a difference is the sun, which usually is absent at night, because it's on the other side of Earth and these rural tiny street lamps hardly make up enough light pollution to reflect back from the atmosphere. The night is not broke, it's just realistically portayed for once.
ilikeguns 12 Posted February 8, 2014 Seems like there are at least two types of players here, one just want an occasional change of scenery like let it be night but I still want to be able to see everything (the way that 99.9% games employ), then there is another type, those players who like realistic night and want to use night time tactics and so on. With the current system both kinds are screwed. Just removing that gamma slider should in my opinion make things better for at least some of us and worse just for those who abuse it.
chekovp 89 Posted February 8, 2014 I really don't get why people think you wouldn't be able to see anything at night with no moon and an over cast. I've spent countless hours in the woods at night and have been able to use a compass and map to find my way around(in real life). It really is not that hard to see outside in the dark once your eyes adjust to it. Currently in the game I can't even see my own hands unless I'm standing directly under a light source. Its not impossible to see in the dark or even very hard....
hombrecz 832 Posted February 8, 2014 I'm ok if they "lock"gamma&brightness, but I will not play in totally pitch black night as it most often is.Don't care if it's realistic, I hope they will make night a TAD brigther and then they can lock gamma/brigthness settings if that is even possible. Artophwar 42 Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) I like playing at night in a lot of games but the night in Dayz is too dark. Dont tell me that it is really that dark in real life. I dont live in a big city and I have gone camping in the woods plenty of times far from civilization. I can see my hands, I can see my feet, I can see enough around me to navigate. In the game every thing is pitch black and the only way I can travel is to follow silhouettes on the horizon or with the flashlight. The flashlight also sucks as it only lights up a small cone and doent look realistic at all. I am not asking to be able to see hundreds of meters but at least be able to navigate my immediate surroundings. EDIT: Also they should use time compression. I think having the day/night cycle follow real time is bad for gameplay. I would much rather be able to play the game and enjoy going through the full day/night cycle in a single session. This will also mean more people would play at night because they would know it would get brighter sooner. Edited February 8, 2014 by Artophwar
Liege 70 Posted February 9, 2014 (edited) I would like them to fix flashlights so they dont shine through walls and then lockout the gamma sliders.. They can make Night as dark as they like (although I would prefer to at least be able to see my outline) and make it that you have to navigate with a light source.. but that lightsource should not be a freaking lighthouse to other players. If inside then yes, it should light up windows.. not the whole damn wall. I quite liked the OP's picture. Also they should use time compression.
