Skill books

Recommended Posts

Not everyone in a zombie apocalypse will know how to repair an engine, or clean a firearm. So how about giving the books in the game more of a purpose, kinda like Skyrim. Sure you have your regular stories and books, then every once in a while you find a book that would level up a skill.

However there's no leveling in DayZ, so instead what about something like a auto repair book?

Reading it would give your character the know how to correctly change the engine in a broken vehicle or fix a fuel tank.

Or finding weapon schematics to know how to correctly disassemble and clean your weapon.

Now you wouldn't have to actually read the book, just opening it and closing it would suffice. But what if your character didn't have the proper knowledge but still had the parts? Well you could still try and preform the repair, but you would have a possibility of actually hurting the car more, or instead of being repaired 100% it's at 75%.

Maybe if you feel this is getting too immersed, then what about it being implemented on hardcore only servers?

These are my thoughts, what are yours?

Sorry if there's already a post on this, I didn't feel like searching for one.

TL:DR - Screw you, read the damn thing.

Terrible idea, DayZ suddenly becomes a race to grind books for skills.

You don't need the book to preform the repair, however you would have a chance for it not to be repaired 100% if you didn't have the knowledge.

Right now I'm for anything that would add something new to the game making it harder

Good idea.

Some ideas:

Trapping & snaring handbook: To allow catching rabbits etc.

Herbal remedies: Make disinfectants from herbs, fever & infection remedies

Medical book: Make splits, stitch stab & bullet wounds for faster healing

Tracking handbook: Allows you to see where people have walked (within a time period).

SAS survival handbook: Turns you into Chuck Norris.. :P

When you die, you start fresh. Does that mean I will have to read the book over and over again? That sounds boring to me.

I don't think anyone is say you actually have to read a book, just having the book gives your character additional skills / abilities.

I would like a system where books could teach ingame techniques instead of checking a wiki for example. But you would be able to do those things before if you knew how.

However, this idea seems about as bad as the RPG skill system idea. So no.

Players should be defined by what THEY know, not their character.
