How about the sun rises in the east and sets in the west

Recommended Posts

Instead of rising in the west and setting in the south west. Be great if you could fix that so we can navigate.

To be honest it doesn't matter since I can't find a populated, day+night server ;-;

Did you really just indicate that you know where the sun rises and where it sets, then ask that it be changed so that you can navigate?

Sheesh.

If they base the sun and moon off of real data as they did the terrain, the sun appearance at that location would be as follows:  If the sun rises today at 8 a.m, it will appear in the ESE, 111.7 degrees east of north.  at 1800 hrs it will set in the WSW at 248.7 degrees.

This being a game I don't think they model every day's data, so in game this is probably set according to one arbitrarily set date, otherwise the sun would rise and set in a different direction every day as it does in the real world, which would really confuse the OP.

It's a game. Sorry I've never navigated by sun in russia.

But you want them to change it to a simplified and incorrrect way so you can navigate???? how about you learn then or find a comnpass???

One of the cool features of the RV engine, which is what arma and dayz use, is that it has a pretty accurate simulation of solar/lunar cycles, changing the date does indeed change where and when the sun rises and sets, it also effects whether or not you get a full moon.

If you know what time of day it is roughly, it's easy to navigate using the suns location, it's how i've been doing it.

Well here you go then.  This will help you learn how and gives several different methods.

Easy method if you only have a wristwatch:  "Point the hour hand at the sun when you are north of the equator. South will be halfway between the hour hand and 12 o'clock "

The data files for arma 2 say Chernarus was 45N 30E (the Ukrainian/Romanian border next to the black sea). You can actually change the date and time in the editor and see the sun and moon follow RL patterns.

I'm not entirely sure the standalone follows that pattern, or rather, that the servers do. But the possibility is in the engine.

Yea, I know the terrain is based on that area. But the lat/long in the data files is in a more russian area.

The difference won't be huge, tho.

Here are directions from the real location to the new lat/long at 45,29 (30 places it in the sea)

And here's an Altitude/Azimuth chart for it.  You're right, there isn't much difference.

Not much hope for you. We are basically in Russia in the high northern latitude. The sun rises south of east and sets south of west. Its much worse in the winter. Where im from the sun was setting at about 4:30 for the last month, and im not nearly as high a latitude as parts of Russia.

But you want them to change it to a simplified and incorrrect way so you can navigate???? how about you learn then or find a comnpass???

Dont think this would help him

These new Standalone players are pretty funny, makes me feel warm inside that I can navigate by the sun, clouds and the stars.

I think one of the neat things about DayZ is that skills you can learn in-game, like navigating by the stars or sun, can actually be useful in the real world.

Or, alternatively, it's nice knowing the real-world skills and being able to apply them in a game instead of having/relying on a shitty HUD compass.

Very often the sun is in the south because it is Northern Hemisphere and in the fall, so it works.
