how did i randomly die?

me and my friend were at the northwest airfield and i finally got my m4,357 mag and the fn pistol and about 500 m4 rounds split between us then im in my inventory and me and my friend hear a random scream coming from my guy and i get the screen saying you are dead. the server had me and my friend and one more person in it, any idea how i died? it happened when i was in my inventory

m4's are cursed.  everytime i find one, something bad happens to me too ;).  It's just the nature of alpha.  I get nervous everytime I load the game hoping that my character is still there.

I watched grimey die by tripping over a box in the firestation, and then I subsequently died by going down the stairs too fast. So yea I'd say random deaths just kinda happen and no sense trying to make sense out of them :P

on the top of the firestation, i wasnt shot and wasnt bleeding and was full on hunger/thirst

I figured 5 possible caues:

 

1. Lag/desynch glitch throught roof textures resulting in damage.

 

2. Some server hopper logged in and "telefragged" you. (if someone log in on place where you are, he will kill you).

 

3. You got shot in the backpack (shot in backpach will kill you) from the hill outside airfield area, where you can get angle on backpack of some one on the firestation roof.

 

4. Hax.

 

5. Your friend troll killed you.

My guess would be something desync related. I've had 2 deaths in SA so far where the only thing I'm certain of is that I was desyncing at the time. One of them I think I even managed to shoot myself. But yeah, mystery deaths abound in this game.

If you want a future in DayZ, I'd recommend just letting deaths go. Especially in Alpha.

 

I was playing with my group the other day, and one guy sprinted into another and killed him instantly.

 

I once crouched and died for no other reason.

Well known glitch/bug where you're ontop/inside of a building and you randomly desync, falling to your death, but incurred no item damage and not seeing yourself die.

Bullets are almost completely silent over a distance. My friend died while climbing a firestation in Elektro, at first I thought the ladder ate him but it was a sniper several hundred meters away.

Never get to attached with your gear. For all you know one of your friends trolled you or someone ghosted you. You were at the Northeast Airfield so it wouldn't surprise me one bit. There will be many more chances to get geared up to the max. (Pro tip : Mess around in your inventory while you're running)

Its possible you stepped on a glitched area. My buddy literally stepped on part of a rock near Devil's Castle and died right on the spot.

It's much more likely that he died to the glitch, tbh.

I died in a similar way for absolutely no reason in a town devoid of any zombie or player, standing still on the top floor of a two-storey building. I looked at some pants lying around on the floor, moused over the item in the inventory, there were no sound whatsoever, nothing. Suddenly the black screen "you are dead". Absolutely no reason whatsoever. I spawned near the place, ran back there, couldn't find my body, and nothing else out of the ordinary. I went to loot the same pants and nothing happened. Must be some bug associated with the new buildings themselves?!

yeah there are  a ton of way to die from terrain glitches, especially in buildings, on stairs/ladders, and clipping with other players.  One time i got stuck on a rock, then catapulted into the air and dies on impact, another time I desynced of a staircase, another time I died when a friend tried to walk past me in a door way. 

 

For you, it sounds to me like you got shot.
