Unable to use compensator on Mosin?

I found a compensator the other day, and finally found a Mosin last night. I painted (camo) the Mosin, then tried to put the compensator on, but the box just stayed red (meaning it wouldn't attach). I then found a clean Mosin in a school/office and it wouldn't attach to that either. Why am I unable to use it? I see tons of discussions about the compensator being used, but I don't understand how it can be used if it doesn't attach to the gun.

From my knowledge, you drag it over your gun, and the condition has to be not ruined.

You just hold it in front of the gun and try not to shoot your hand off.
