KoS and apocalypse go hand in hand.... usually

Recommended Posts

If the world ended suddenly and resources were scarse, society would turn into kill or be killed. It makes sense and it happens in any apocalyptic fiction you read. KoS, deception, and paranoia is to be expected. A majority of the groups you run into would be protective of their own/low on supplies as it is and do what needed to be done to survive. KoS is just a part of an apocalyptic scenario.

The only time you don't see KoS become as prevalent in apocalyptic fiction is when there's a large enough threat that requires the man power to handle it. At the current time, Dayz is pretty much built to support KoS. If you don't want KoS, then the threat (zombies) need to really be intensified. Imagine if small cities were so populated with zombies that you needed a small group to survive and big cities like elektro were infested to the point that you needed a raid group to explore. At that point, you'd be considered a rare commodity on these 40-50 man servers and killing you on sight would mean they might not have the man power to explore higher target places. You'd still have rogue factions and gangs but a large enough npc threat would really promote teamplay over kos.

Just some food for thought from a fan of apocalyptic fiction.

It works in apocalyptic fiction,  but when you look at scenarios in real life and in history and it's a tad different.

The is a sort of KoS mentality, but for the most part it becomes gangs and people aren't always outright murdered, just robbed of their stuff.

Somalia hasn't had a lasting government for decades, they're a bunch of tribes and warlords who run cities. If you're not part of their tribe/clan/gang (whichever term they use), then you don't get food. If you're just a refugee trying to survive and pose no threat they won't kill you, but they won't help you.

The Wild West of the US was this same way. Small towns and villages were full of innocents trying to get by. Survival was harsh, supplies weren't wide spread and common, and so in the wilderness bandits would rob you for everything. Sometimes they'd kill you, sometimes they wouldn't.

In a disaster from floods, hurricanes, tsunamis etc. people don't just run around killing each other, they tend to group up and help. In the long term I can see animosity growing between groups.

I'm not saying KoS needs to go away as it's a core part of the paranoia-pillar this game stands on, it's just unrealistic to me for people to blindly kill anything that's human.

I don't really think wild west to zombie apocalypse is really a good comparison...I mean we're talking "Humanity is fighting to survive" crap here. I don't really think this works :/

Sure it does. They have one main key thing in common: there are zero rules out there.

Supplies were more common then, but banditry was legendary for being common place as well. They rarely just simply shot you from 100 yards for your supplies. Not that they didn't at all, but ti wasn't every other bandit.

Well that may be a common denominator, but I  think it's like comparing a Red dumptruck and a red apple. Saying they're both red doesn't really necessarily make them a common item. I think those comparisons are a BIIIIT far fetched. but you're entitled to your opinion xD

No, you're completely right. I think I'm seeing a lot of comparisons to it having just spent Saturday played Red Dead with some friends, and everyone is KoS on there, even though it gets you nothing but lulz and maybe a better rifle if he's ranked higher than you.

As you said, we both have opinions, and they're just different.

OP: as my kindle is pretty much packed with zombie-apocalypse books I must point out to the while KoS in books and films do happen, KoS also goes hand in hand with being an ars*hole in these stories!

I would like to think that there would be more humanity around than to simply turn to KoS the moment someone mutters the words 'zombie outbreak'. If there isn't, then let the zombies have the planet as humanity wouldn't deserve it!

On a side note, in an apocalypse if KoS became mandatory as you seem to be speculating - my guess is that america would wipe itself out within 72 hours of it starting ;)

Gee, you should just stop discussing, as we all know, KOS is perfectly justified. Anyone knows that real life people in similar situations as DayZ often have reactions like;

´´Lel I took his musin compensator, 1337 headshot, no damage his gear´´

´´I krill 32 peoples from Balota tower, 3PP rly relistic no chets´´

´´That unarmed guy i saw in my LR scope moving away from me at a range of 300 meters was totally a threat, i had to eliminate it´´

´´I don't usually murder people in cold blood but I really needed a 9-Volt battery´´

´´I was just roleplaying a crazy axe murderer´´

Just look it up, in every historical natural disaster etc, the large majority of people did things like this. I think there was a few people who helped each other and tried to survive, but I'm not sure about that. Also, if people ended up in a place they didn't like, they would jump off a building.

That depends, to be honest countries with smaller military access i assume would be taken out quicker. And not really by KOS ppl, by zombies and the lack of ammunition unlike most americans have to fend them off with. You gotta remember we have almost every kind of gun you can think of. Some things are so easy to get your hands on to defend your home with its not even funny illegal or not.

Infact if i remember correctly we recently had in the past year a guy that LITERALLY broke down trying to study to become some kind of medical doctor got ahold of some REALLY nasty firearms and mowed a bunch of damn little kids down with. So its SUPER easy to get guns to defend yourself and home if need be.

It is this easy access, and the already present willingness to use them that I am referring to. With all the stories we hear from 'across the pond' about random shootings it does seem like the US is just an outbreak away from immediately defending themselves from their neighbours.

I appreciate it that it is those who 'snap' we hear about but I do believe that the US would soon sink back into its wild-west days the moment the apocalypse hits. Tho finally all those doomsday-preppers will be able to sit smuggly in their bunkers.

Don't disagree though that even places like the UK are screwed if there was an outbreak due to lack of guns!!

Best weapon I have is a 7-iron and a wicked backswing.

The way you put it sounds like its a group effort. Id say DayZ is more about individuals surviving. OR very small groups.

People arent organized. It would be cool if you had huge groups trekking from town to town or controling a city once farming becomes a thing. But I dont see how that  could work on normal hop-in, hop-out servers. Private hives, maybe. IF they communicate. Teamspeak master race I guess.
