suggestion - Large servers and bad weapons

Recommended Posts

Servers

(servers go 200-300 people)

I really think that large servers are extremely important and should be implemented before anything else in the alfa is added or changed.(personal opinion). At the moment there is no very large squads because who want's to get 10-15 people together to shoot the other 20ish people on a server. Along with this the game work is huge and 1 person per Km^2 is a pretty acceptable density for a apocalypse. This will also mean that yes people will have more people to shoot at BUT more people to be shot by, more people to try and sneak around, more people to interact with and less people resorting to entertain them selfs by shooting new spawns for the hell of it. I know there is something like this going to be in the final game but it would be really awesome if it was implemented asap

Bad weapons

I feel there are two types of "cool" and "fun" weapons. One being awesome high-tech shiny military loot, with the other being ductaped guns that you built with scrap parts and it has useless attachments that seem useful. Some one has suggested makeshift molotovs and flamethroers. Thing like this short range fun and people will choose them over snipe rifles and sitting 1k away in a bush. It also gives a more rustic post apocalyptic survival element to the game.

Well mister "I want more people" go ahead and try to stabilize the servers with 40 people then talk about 200.

Even the optimized ArmA 2 mod didn't have as many players.

And about guns.

That isn't a very good idea, you would cry as well (( No offence, but if you aren't then you wont obv )) if someone kept throwing molotovs at you or ambushing you with flamethrowers. That shit would be TOOOOOO overpowered.

Wrong time, wrong place.

I'm down with molotov grenades. Just so long as they explode on contact as well as have a chance to be "duds" (glass didn't break) that can be picked up.

As far as flame throwers, I think the issue is more "how would they work within the confines of the engine" more than anything else. Also what kind of flamethrower are you talking about? Good luck building a ww2 style napalm thrower. And even if you could, using one would be suicidal.

If its essentially a giant acetylene torch, well, yeah, sure. But thats barely better than a melee weapon.

I don't see whats overpowered about either.

In reality, 200-300 players on Chernarus would be a giant clusterfuck mate :) Even you have to admit it wont be fun any longer.
You will not be able to run for more then 2 mins, and then you are shot. People would "magicly" appear everywhere, because they are logging into the server and NOBODY would ever get to live for more then 1 hour ingame.
I have to say yes to abit more people (70-80 max) but hell no to 200-300 :) Its simply to much hehe.

As for weapons, i think its way way to early to say anything about what types of weapons we are getting, we got such a small amount of guns atm, so ofc theres gonna be very big differences between them, but i can promise you theres gonna be alot more, in all categories :)
And who is to say the "awesome high-tech shiny military loot" is actually better in all situations, then "ductaped guns that you built with scrap parts and it has useless attachments that seem useful"? :)
Its all about the play style, what you would like to do and how you expect to handle engagements tbh.

Will use my self as an example here.

Ive yet to pick up an actual gun, found plenty but i left them, because i like running with nothing but an axe :)
I like the thrill of having to sneak up to someone and take them down with a melee weapon, so much more then any guns ingame.
Thats just how i play and it works quite well for me hehe.

I understand stabilising servers would be hard, I am not expecting it to just happen. Maybe in small steps 40 then 80 then 100 so on and so on. you could help fix that shot in 2 seconds by making ammo very scarce, if the zombies are going to be more of a problem in the standalone than they are in the mod people might start reserving there ammo and the increase in population will mean that more people can close to take the "sneak up behind them with an axe" approach. As we stand today we don't know what would happen if there were more players on the server because we haven't played days with 2-300 people. I just think it would increase the amount of large squads, imagine two groups of 20 going against each other in a clan war. or a sniper sitting on a hill shooting a bunch of targets is going to piss a lot of people off and there going to hunt him down. your going to have to take a shot then move, or just think more about shooting in the first place. Also grenades are hard to throw, you would have to take time to make lite aim and then throw the molotove, and with the current system in dayz if someone has there weapon up you can out run them.

Also Byresen exactly, but as it stands in the mod (on some servers) you can get an as50 with thermals and take out absolutely anything with little to no skill at any range with one hit. Stuff like that I don't particular want in the game.

Well thats why Rocket doesnt want any kind of AS50 thermal weapons in the game tbh :)
Its to easy and doesnt provide a challenge for the player. (he said this multible times, during the beginning of the development process)

But i see your point about large squads going against each other, not a bad scenario tbh.
I just think 200-300 people would be to much and take the survival focus away abit, making it more of a DM game, which (my oppinion) really isnt the true vision of DayZ hehe.

Im confident they want more then 40 people on a server, no doubt, but i dont think we will ever see more then 150 tbh.
Both because of the impact it will have on "Dean's vision" but also because i simply dont believe the RV engine will ever be able to handle that, along with a couple of thousands Z's :)

MM true I just hope larger servers are implemented soon, I just think that at the moment to many people are just shooting on sight because of how bored they are. And I mean yes it might just turn into a big DM but if you take away some of the ammo from the people that could help cut down on it. It might also start making people want to trade and bandit more holding people up for there bullets instead of just shooting them for it. it should be interesting seeing how this global loot table will work out.

Also I am hoping for role-play specific servers, but that takes a lot of moderating.
