Colour blind mode...

Recommended Posts

More and more games are adding this 'mode' now. It effects only 1% of women but 10% of men.

I'm personally, finding it very difficult to even see simple things like a team mate running next to me. I keep having to ask him where he has gone. No, this isn't camouflage. This is colour blindness.

e.g: Battlefield... all players look like they have green names to me. I'm advised that these are actually red vs green. Until I switch colour blind mode on, I really can't tell friend from foe.

I believe it would be extremely difficult to implement in a game like this, but I clearly wish you that this feature will come in the future...but I don't think this will considered a priority before late beta/release, unfortunately.

Edit: this feature could also be abused by non colorblind players, in order to spot people in the wilderness, causing another problem. I wish you the best experience in dayz in the future, anyway :)

To my understanding (I may be totally wrong...).

Colour blind mode is simply a filter that has been added? I know some people have "abused" this in battlefield. That said, my friend who has 100% eyesight, hates the mode. For him, he can't see anything... the roles are reversed.

What difference would it make in DayZ?

If you can play BF4 with colorblind mode on there should be no problem at all. The only colors changing are nametags which there are none of in DayZ.

Yeah, I was under the impression that colourblind modes only affected text/HUD as modifying the colours of the actual game would offer a massive unfair advantage to players with perfect eyesight that use colourblind mode.

Various games implement them differently. Someone told me, Simcity's mode changes the colours of the buildings. This, isn't just hud/text stuff.
I've found programs that allow users to see what colour blind people see on their desktops... but, I can't find one that 'reverses' it.

I think, it's probably best to fiddle around in the nvidia control panel instead. Even items on the floor... I can barely see! ha.

Yeah, but the difference is that using colourblind mode in that way does not give a player an unfiar advantage in Sim City.

The ability to turn on colourblind mode to make it easier to spot people in DayZ would be gamebreaking.

Obviously, I can't comment on what other players may or may not see so unsure of how much of an advantage they'd get.

I'll just tweak my settings instead... any possible feature as you say, could be abused.

I was going to start a new topic on this, but found this thread when I searched :D

Now I'll start off by saying I am totally colour blind and as such I see no colours or in military terms its classed as CP3 (the majority of people that suffer colour blindness are CP2 and can't see reds/oranges/greens, only a very very small percentage are CP3/totally colour blind).  I don't have trouble distinguishing players in the environment, but maybe that is because I will sit in hidden for a fair amount of time just watching where I am about to run to or maybe I have just been lucky.

The only thing I have trouble with is the ui in the inventory screen.  Where it says what effects your character is suffering from (eg. hungry, thirsty etc.).  I didn't even realise that there where differing colours until I watched a Youtube clip in the main forum.  I just ask my wife now or if she isn't around (or can't be bothered worrying about my character in a computer game which is more likely), I'll just eat and drink as much as possible.  Meh you just have to live with it I suppose.

In my opinion it isn't something to spend vast amounts of time on coming up with a work around or implementing, as it effects so few people, but maybe it could be worked on in a future patch after the game goes gold.  One possible solution I thought of is just to put a border around the ui notification box.  The thicker the outline would mean the worse your condition would be.  Or even a single outline for the mildest of symptoms to a double thin line for medium effects and finally a thick outline for the worst of the effects.

As I said, its not something that effects normal play (for me that is, others may find it harder) and it really doesn't need that much dev time spent on it (if any at all ofc).  But it would be nice to have something like this in the future.  Anyway I still love the game and will keep playing it regardless of any ui changes.  This is really the only thing I have found (that hasn't already had a million threads on it), that I could think of as a suggestion.  Keep up the good work.

I would like to bump this post and it's content - as well as all the good and kind words towards your work that came with it. I'm a huge fan and I cannot imagine life without DayZ anymore :)

That's why I'd be even more happy to be able to say "Yes, the developers of (one of) my favourite game(s) actually listened and did something about an issue that has been ignored in software development for all too long. Whenever I see a red vs. green indicator as the only possible way to tell the different state of a device etc. I just get a little mad. I can never tell if my Wii is on, if my Router is working etc.

In software this is always so easy to solve - just use symbols borders, background texture, whatever - that I cannot imagine why it would not be done. How a medium to large development team can NOT include a colorblind male is a statistical miracle to me.

just my two cents :)

Actually no, it's seems easy as can be since these games already have colour filters. I think at first, it can be very simple to put a mode with different colour filters for the menu, inventory menu, ..., or at least change the icons to make them distinguishable without colours (It might be needed for immersion when colour-blind because of lack of blood anyway, opening a menu where all is in colour is a bit odd)

Luckily, Rocket has announced the feature is being looked into, I just hope they start with this easy part that won't take much work and will be useful to a certain amount of players and look into world colouring filters straight afterwards, alpha is made for testing these things and taking them back out if they don't work out. The rest of the game isn't balanced yet and you can cheat with luminosity and gamma settings for night time and even day. You can also cheat when your health level is low and have a blurry screen by disabling post-processing, so this won't be the one cheat to rule them all. Besides, when colour-blind mode is well done, it really doesn't seem to make much of a difference.
