Some thoughts for the future

Recommended Posts

Just some thoughts I had responding to some of the posts on the forum. These are some suggestions for some features that lie within the scope of the game that could solve some of the problems with spawning, loot and bandits...

Random airdrops:

These could take place at random moments with a cargo aircraft flying over and droping a number of "relief crates". The crates could land anywhere in the path of the aircraft which would be visable to people on the ground who could then try to search benieth the flightpath. Crates could be in fields forest or even towns and would despawn after a server restart. This would spread some significant loot over the map at random and give the dogs a ball to chase as well (so to speak)

Infectious illness:

Imagine if loot taken by bandits could be infected and perhaps make them ill. We have the drugs and meds in the game as well as disinfectant. So if you DO shoot a guy for his stuff you have to sit there and clean it before you take it and become a target yourself.

Illness could also require a course of antibiotics to cure

Weather:

I am sure this is already in the pipeline. But once again cold and bad weather together with exposure could lead to illness which could be spread to other players (or turn then into zombies?)

I could see this working, but only if there was an indication that an object might be infected. Something like a "blood-soaked" status for an item.

So, a corpse might have a pair of hunter's pant on them, but because they were shot it now has the blood-soaked status (e.g. blood-soaked hunter's pants). Which means that wearing that item gives you a 50% chance to become infected with a disease.

I think the infectious illness and weather are great ideas. Beats me how they would be implemented though but thats what developers are for right.

I am not too keen on the idea of random airdrops (look into rust if you have not already) i just dont think its realistic enough to think cargo planes would be flying around dropping off loot in the middle of nowhere and i can see a number of problems being created by it when they add things like cars and helicopters in. For example if you are freshly spawned on a server that has several means of transport what chance do you have of ever getting near that airdrop?? very little i suspect.

Meh... Not bothered. Might be interesting for the first few times, but would depend on the variability and quality of loot whether it would have any longterm appeal.

You realise that infections are already coded into the config ATM, right? They're just not activated in the current builds. Might want to hold off on that until you find out what sort of PITA these are going to be. HINT: Almost everything in DayZ has the potential to make you sick with something!

Synchronising weather across multiple clients and server has always been problematic in the RV engines. I'm not saying that the devs haven't got a few novel tricks up their sleeve but how far they can go with this is an interesting question.

As to player-turned-zombies, There has already been a response from Rocket on that, and it appears to be problematic WRT server load, unless they can also find some deep programming foo to sort it.

Judging by some commets posted today by one of the people higher up the food chain, server hopping may soon be a bit more complicated than it is now with a "linger time" before you charactor disappears from the server and possibbly additional penalties when servers are changed often. In such a case weather would be a bit less dependent on being uniform over all servers as players would become, albeit only slightly, more server specific at least in the short term. In other words a person would be less able to switch servers again and again until they found one with weather they like.

With regards to illness, I was thinking more in the terms of contagen instead of infection. Lets not just have sickness, lets make it contagious! Of course that could get out of hand with empty servers killed off by some computer black plague! LOL
