filling multiple canteens

how do i do this, i have 3 canteens in my inventory,i can assign one into my hand slot and fill it no problem, but trying to select the second canteen is proving troublesome. if i try to drag a new canteen in to my hand space in bottom center "hand" slot on inventory  screen it mearly changes postion with first canteen in bag,but wont let me select 2nd.  when deleting canteen from tool bar and selecting something else (axe for example) then drop second canteen on tool bar it selects the first (now filled ) canteen. it does the same and jumps to first canteen.

 

Am i only supposed to have 1 canteen i can fill?

 

im slightly bemused on this.

 

do i need so many canteens?

im tending to fill the one and just drink from ponds/wells regardless . 

 

but surely i should be able to fill all the refillable containers i have?

Put the one you want to fill in your hands. Maybe try putting the full one back in your backpack before putting the empty one in your hands (not trying to over-swap one for the other)?

I just drag my axe into my hands which resets the canteens. Swapping over canteens doesn't seem to work and is bugged.  Anyone got a better suggestion?

Dragging the canteen in my hands back into the inventory and then putting the other one in my hands seems to work fine. And it is quite useful to have two canteens (or more I suppose).

Red [X] in the corner of the hands box returns the current item to inventory or the ground. Swapping items of the same sort doesn't seem to work ATM.

Yeah, as of right now, the game doesn't seem to recognize canteen 2 as a different item on your hotkey. You just need to take the first out of your hands by either putting something else in them or just clicking the little red "x" in the right corner of your 'hands' area. To fill the second, you can't rely on your hotkey, you need to manually drag the other empty ones into your hands and fill as you would normally. This also applies wo water bottles and canteens together. The inventory tends not to distinguish the difference even between the two types of containers so you need to manually remove the one in your hands every time. I personally will have as many as 5 canteens depending on the other gear I find and how far I intend to travel without stopping for supply runs.
