Help a noob find good locations

I just started playing DayZ, I am able to sneak around most zombies thus far, I'm just having trouble finding items. In my first life I ran across a Medical Military camp, but there was no loot there. I was surprised that there was nothing there. Can you please help me with some hints as to where I could find a weapon?

Run straight into < Move carefully through

Be wary of the fire station and other large buildings. People will be harbored in there, most likely with more powerful guns than you.

Thanks for the tips. Hopefully I'll be able to find more than empty cans and a crowbar my next try.

The crowbar takes 3-4 hits to kill one zombie. Ridiculous piece of weaponry. I suggest the hatchet, as it takes one swing and chops trees for wood for fireplaces for cooked meat for extra food. Danke.

i find loot spots just never have any idea where i am. lost my 3rd life today had a gun with ammo sadly lacked food and died trying to find it lolz

To be honenest from my experience if you have an ok supply of ammo and need food/pop/water kill some zombies in a smaller town. Generally if I kill 5-6 I almost always find a can of food or pepsi on them. Or if you get a hatchet and get decent enough with it you can use that and take em out one at a time without wasting ammo. But I have only been playing for a couple days now so I may just be getting lucky.

Also if need be either print out a map or run to a major city during the day and get used to the layout. Then go to a server thats nighttime and try thoes. Even running at night half the time zombies stop following you pretty quickly and while night is a haven for bandits in big cities I've found it much more survivable than during the day. Had a guy chase me for nearly 30min at night tonight and never actually hit me. He either ran out of ammo or gave up lol.

My most recent survivor found a map and beelined to Berezino. When I got there all I had was my starter equip and a hatchet.

After raiding:

3 apartments

2 grocery stores

2 restaurants

1 hospital

I had:

Lee enfield with 5 magazines

Makarov with 3 clips

ALICE bag full of food/soda and meds

2 canteens

I then used my map to navigate to the airfield and logged off so I can adventure there tomorrow.
