^in addition to what he says, use landmarks and compare those to the map to help find out where you are when you get in. After a while, you'll rarely need the map at all.

Or join a server which allows you to choose where you spawn near and look at the environment.

Learning to read Cyrillic only takes one day. It's that easy. Learning Russian might prevent you getting killed by the many Russian players in DayZ who typically play bandit style. I wouldn't count in it, though.
