Randomized Survivor Corpses

Recommended Posts

The concept of the helicopter crash sites in the original mod was great in that it added a randomized variable to the game world that rewarded players for exploring the environment on their own accord instead of mindlessly following a map. I feel that this concept should be expanded further in a smaller form factor through randomized survivor corpses.

-- When a server starts up/restarts, a good number of survivor corpses will be placed all throughout the game world. These corpses can be found in or around anywhere that loot can be normally found, such as houses in towns and cities, fire stations, military barracks, markets, so on and so forth.

-- The loot you find on a corpse will be reminiscent to the environment the corpse is located in or around, and the loot will typically consist of some of the better possible items you could find in that environment. A corpse found in a small town may have a small backpack filled with canned food and water, minor equipment, additional clothing and possibly a civilian weapon; a corpse found near a military site may have a larger backpack, an assault vest, bulkier clothing, rare equipment, an ammunition box and possibly a military-grade weapon.

-- Examining a survivor corpse and taking their loot into context can tell how this survivor met their ultimate fate. An emaciated corpse with empty cans of food and water probably died of starvation; a bloodied corpse with gunshot wounds to the back and a journal entry depicting an uneasy relationship with another survivor could point to a betrayal of trust.

-- The "flies surrounding a corpse" sound effect from the original mod could be implemented again as a means of more easily locating a nearby survivor corpse that would otherwise be concealed by the environment.

-- Not all corpses will be face down on the ground. Some can be slouched back into a chair, huddled up in a corner, leaning over a table or counter, found within vehicles, or have been torn asunder by the infected.

-- These corpses will be more common than helicopter crash sites, but still relatively uncommon. You may find one of these survivor corpses in every other town, and usually one or two in each given city.

These corpses will serve the same functionality of helicopter crash sites, but on a smaller form factor. These would promote the more extensive exploration of one's environment in order to find and reap the benefits of loot found on these corpses, and the more unique characteristics of each corpse and how they passed can help add an additional layer of immersion and dread to the game world. This all may sound redundant in comparison to the survivor corpses of actual players, but I feel this would better help promote the exploration of areas where players aren't as likely to explore/die within themselves.

I look to increase the game's immersion and improve gameplay mechanics through the suggestions I make, and many of these suggestions make the game harder while others make them easier. I am willing to share these ideas if you're interested.

I would like to "replace" some of the loot spawns with corpses. I mean a soldier who died when fighting zombies would not put his gun back to his barracks would he? Or maybe he died in the barracks then he would still have the gun on him and not lying in the room.

So: Some fixed points in buildings where corpses might spawn (like a container) and some random corpses in the wild and on streets.

Instead of looting a weapon randomly spawned in the ground or on a bed somewhere in the base,it would prefer if i were to pry it from a soldier's dead body. Also along with the loot we find on them,we can also find something like diary, notes or audio material and have a basic background about them.Who they were, what they did and how they died.It would be a nice touch on the story behind the outbreak. :)

Exactly. It adds a small yet meaningful layer of immersion to the game world, and loot distribution can be easily modified with these survivor corpses in mind. That M4A1 you found in a military barracks could instead be found on a survivor's corpse who passed away in his sleep by a severe infection he had been suffering through, as stated by a journal entry on the body and a used package of antibiotics.

Actually one of the good exploration boosting suggestions out there.
