Melee combat

Recommended Posts

One of the biggest issues for me is the animations in the game at the moment. With the status being alpha, I can certainly understand why they are still unpolished. However, I really hope they take the time to fix some of the glaring issues that the animations cause. The big one I would like to see fixed is the melee combat animations. The mod wasn't build to have melee combat in any real functional way, but I think with the standalone they should really address this.

First off the "hack" that we get is pretty lame. Not only is my character using the axe left handed, which I don't think should be default, but he also short arms the swing in a semi diagonal swipe. This is not at all how I would swing an axe to defend myself against a screaming blood thirsty zombie. We all know that a blow to the head is the best way to kill them. The default animation needs to be a strong overhead strike, coming down in a vertical manner. This is the best way to kill your opponent when they have no defense, like a zombie, because you are splitting them in two.

Second, they need to get us multiple strikes to use. If anyone has played Chivalry, I think something like that ( I know this game will never be a close quarters combat sim ) would help alot. Side swipes, over head chops, REVERSE ANGLES, would all help tremendously and make the game a lot more fun when you go melee. It would also make for a fun time if you didn't have a gun and managed to sneak up on another player.

I really hope they take the time to polish this part of Dayz SA. I think it would make a huge difference and maybe even allow for a few more zombies, since the players would be able to kill them easier. How can you not like more zombies!?

The melee combat system as it is now - and especially the animations are merely a placeholder.

I think there was a devtalk video on youtube where Dean was saying he too was not that thrilled with the close combat as it is now, but there will be more depth added to it (supposedly more variation / fighting styles like you mentioned).

I also think there should be more than one way to swing your axe around - at the moment you pretty much have 2 options :

weapon drawn / weapon not drawn

I don´t know if a drawn axe (which the character holds defending in front him) adds some + for blocking odds but i noticed that the angle in which you hit (in drawn mode) is slided way to the right. Which sucks, cause you are not hitting where the crosshair points.

This might be due to the new and ultra realistic combat engine (which is also demonstrated in the devvlog) in which you hit the target exactly on the point where the weapon impacts.

Anyhow I´m sure close combat is a priority for devs and will be beautifully refurbished since it´s a really important part of the game.

Since then i will enjoy knocking out people as a fresh spawn and running away with their backpacks. (:

The left handed axe (and other melee weapons) is basically a placeholder now, that was the only way how to get two handed melee in alpha. One of next upcoming updates will include huge change to the two handed melee system. Unfortunately we have to do all relavant animations first before you see any of the changes in game. This will include new moves with two handed melee weapons, stances, attacks and most of all - it will be right handed. Also I'm pretty sure melee system in general will be further updated to be more and more advanced :)

With better animations, a lot could be done with what we already have. "Lowered" you have a quick downward strike, while raised you can block a frontal attack, and you have a slower swing attack that makes it easier to hit a strafing target.

It's nice to know this is an area of development, though.

OP has some good points, I would like to see at the very least a "Block" key that requires a bit of timing.

A "Grab" or "shove" key would be nice for CQC!

hahaha we I would just like to kill a zombie without running around in circles and swinging and missing because I don't have a good overhead or sideways swipe!

Those damn left handed axes are the problem! Thanks for the response! :)

Nice to hear they are going to upgrade it. Can I also suggest a shield? I mentioned this in another thread about using items with one hand. I think some weapons, like a knife, wrench, bat, or hatchet should be used one handed and allow us freedom with our other hand. Adding something awesome like a bullet proof riot shield would be ridiculously fun for squad play where you wanted to assault a group hunkered down at say the NWAF.

Those are awesome ideas. I really like the "shove and grab" kind of like Battlefield where you can counter a knife attack, but I think the shove would work better as a kick, maybe? It seems more natural while you have a weapon in hand to kick to push a player back.

directional swings using W,A,S,D, with mouse 1 & 2

and block or dodge using Q & E .

id like to see mouse 1 & mouse 2 as left punch , right punch .

but would negate zoom in hand to hand combat ?

these mechanics were used in the riddick games , & i would not agree with the take down combos from that game !

but would like to use a knife more effectively . get a little stabby some times !

As a lefty, I'm declaring that as tantamount to Hate Speech!

It's the only thing they've got right!
