Sylosis 0 Posted January 15, 2014 So hum, I am new to DayZ. I haven't even played the Arma II mod. So, I am really new. My first impression is that yes, the game is fun, but items respawn are inexistent, right?. After 2 hours of play time, I only was able to found a bunch of sunglasses, bunch of pants, etc. I was on a server with a "decent" population (20ish) The main reason was, and I understood after checking some videos, that the houses I was looting had already been looted. That is, every door was opened. I was finally able to find something (an empty backpack) when I decided to change server and select one with not too many players. As of now, is the only way to find stuff is to change server until you have decent equipment? If so, I guess the developers are working on something right, loot respawn maybe? I get the idea that gear should not be too easy to find (it's a survival game after all), but still, I don't think server hopping should be encouraged, which is kinda the case right now. Thanks for the input!
Gugolas 228 Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) Loot respawn existed even in the mod. They will probably insert it again (nobody knows how it will work obviously) when the servers will be able to handle the performance load. Remember that this game is an alpha test and will be completed in more than one year ;)Nobody wants to encourage server hopping... stolenbanjos 110 Posted January 15, 2014 Loot and spawns aren't complete - you can hop and get geared or you can explore trying to survive and you find what you find. I play the latter way and I also camp hopper spots. Killing server hoppers is a GREAT way to get geared fast.
BadAsh (DayZ) 1513 Posted January 15, 2014 There is always some place on the map which hasn't been looted. Go inland. I've been around the map twice with my current character and I only ever saw other players on the coast. Lots of towns everywhere with fresh loot (and zombies). The only real risk of running into other players inland atm is at the airfields and military bases, and those are mostly server hoppers who won't leave those places anyway. lumo1234 68 Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) At the moment loot and zombies only respawn on server resets. It will remain this way until further optimization has been carried out. I play on only 1 server and i am fully geared and honestly had no problems obtaining this gear. Head inland instead of just on the coast. I am also new to dayz never played the mod, but it seems to me the whole point to this game is to work for gear/survival, hopping servers is not working for gear it makes the whole job easier than it already is and tbh seems like it would ruin the experience on the whole. On the other hand i cant help but smile when im pretty sure ive killed a server hopper :D Edited January 15, 2014 by lumo1234

Don't worry. I don't think asking questions or suggesting things, means that I don't get the fact that the game is far from finished. I am not bitching, just asking. How often do server reset for loot respawn? Anybody knows? I guess it depends of each server?

Thanks for the input! It seems that most servers are currently on a four hour restart cycle... or maybe that's just the one or two I've been on over the past week or so. As long as you can find enough food not to starve, hang tight and wait for a restart, at which point all loot and zombies will respawn. Water is everywhere, so thirst shouldn't be an issue. Just go to first person perspective in front of any body of water or well and you'll get the "drink water" prompt by looking at it. Gugolas 228 Posted January 15, 2014 Don't get me wrong, I wasn't doing the fucking alpha fan, I'm sorry if I didn't explain myself well, I just wanted to underline that this is something that has to change in an alpha :)
pinkdino99 13 Posted January 15, 2014 My first game last night and there was stacks of loot. On a 30+ population server I didn't see anyone in late session. It's the luck of the draw methinks. It did take me 2.5 hrs to get comfortably looted in though, and that was in an untouched area. Patience may be the key.Open doors should be a sure sign that a house/building has been done so I wouldn't bother.
lumo1234 68 Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) Yeah it seems to vary from server to server from what ive read, on the one time i did change server the admins of that server restarted it every 2 hours. The main server i play on seems to be between 2-3 hours. Edited January 15, 2014 by lumo1234

You were lucky and I wasn't. I am serious when I say that 100% of the buildings I saw had opened doors. I'll be patient and continue roaming. Hopefully I'll find something... If I don't die from thirst or hunger first.

SixGunLover 54 Posted January 15, 2014 I think that when there will be more civilian weapons, there will be also less servers hopping. Most of the players that end up at the military building dont even have a weapons, so they servers hop if they are unlucky. When you already have a weapons, you just move somewhere else. Window Licker 504 Posted January 15, 2014 Personally I've found that "server hoppers" only search a small area ie in NWAF it's Control tower, fire station and the other building. Even with these building stripped of loot I managed to scavenge a M4 and all pristine attachments. As suggested by others there are plenty of places inland that have a ton of loot in them. Also there are a few military buildings that I regularly visit which are a little out of the way and get looted only once in a blue moon.
bushwaka 48 Posted January 15, 2014 See me, I'm a sneaky bastard. I have always been an early riser since I was a kid. I get up every morning for work at around 5am. Even at weekends, its the same. Its a habit, and I only need a round 5/6 hours sleep. So while you mob are getting some zzzzzzzzzzz's, I'm in the usual places looting my bollox off!!! jasher11 67 Posted January 15, 2014 yeah i dont know where your based but if you want to get gear either kill/hold people up for it or go on a server that is in a diff country, i live in UK and i play at around 6-10pm so i play on central US/ west US servers where everybody is away so most servers are empty if i want gear or sometimes i find low pop GB servers ( if i want gear/am doing medic run if not i go on a 20-40player server) also for me i now have 105hours so finding gear is second nature after a death, for example in my most recent life, i spawned just south of berezino (luckily) ran to construction site, fire axe + full size back pack, by the time i am finished in berezino i have played between 20mins and 45mins i have plenty of food and water and am at the healthy status and i have a magnum w/ ammo
Ziggykong 33 Posted January 15, 2014 My take on server hopping is that If your having problems finding gear you may have better luck looking in places that new to you, like inland or sparsely populated areas, so that you'll eventually learn where the gears at. Also this is a survival game, and I have a better time playing it when I'm not always finding what I need and have to constantly look for new things to sustain myself, so I think you would be robbing yourself of the games intended experience if you server hop. Another reason I don't like server-hoppers would be that they don't think creatively, but instead exploit the game to get a full kit in less than an hour, and then presumably run up and down the coast combat logging and flaunting gear as though it were something that was earned. djporternz 644 Posted January 15, 2014 I don't run with a gun, so I don't find the need for the insta-magi-server loot jumpy crap that the hardman PvP Kos-kiddies go in for. That's right folks, I don't feel the need to run for the M4, Mosin, FNX or Magnum. I don't collect them, their accessories or their ammo. Bite me. You CAN pretty much play the game anyway you feel like ATM, and if you feel that your experience can be enhanced by server jumping for fat loot, then go do that. There is no right or wrong here. It's a 'feature' of the game. Same as ghosting and combat logging. People are going to do it until such time as they can't anymore. But it's not the only way to play this game. I'm currently living in Stary Sobor on the Delicious Donuts server, and running the Supermarket there. Every server reset I'm in game I run around Stary and see what's been delivered and bring it back to the store and restock the shelves. Usually lots of clothes, footwear and food, a few books, camping and sports gear, and occasionally a Mosin and ammo. Lay it all out and then sit back and wait for the customers to roll on by up the street. So if you're in the mind to, and can bear the ping and lag to a southern hemisphere server and are in the Stary area, drop on by for a chat. Maybe trade for what you want or just come by and take a few things to get by, I don't mind which. I've got a new shipment coming by in a few hours. So play how you want.
DirtyscumbagLith 270 Posted January 15, 2014 Dunno what the fix is. All I know is if they get rid of server hopping, there better be ways to get weapons/ammo in a legitimate/timely manner. I have zero desire to run around in that game for 12 hours with a can of beans and sunglasses as my weapon.

So for a survival simulator, he might be doing it a lot smarter then 'a fighter' does ;) DJPorterNZ, if I could connect to your server, I'd definitely have a chat and maybe have a look at your wares! :beans: Too bad I live in Europe.
