possible solution to 3PP imbalance?

Recommended Posts

Sorry for yet another topic on 3rd person view. Feel free to ignore or delete if you had enough.

But I too had enough of reading the same old things on this very interesting but also annoying topic, and I just thought of a possible very simple and achievable (possibly already present in some game modes) way of balancing the two worlds.

CROSSHAIRS

One true advantage 3PP experts have over 1PP hardcorers usually have is the ability to do everything from 3PP comfortably, enabling them to use all the exploits the 3rd person allows them, with no real limits.

One natural limit to this gameplay style is the presence of Crosshairs. Crosshairs should only exists when empty handed, to aid in item retrieval and object interaction (eg water pump, doors etc). Whenever using any weapon (meelee included, as i believe center of screen is a good enough crosshair for an hatchet) your crosshair should be the correct use of weapon sights. They exist for a reason, and this is the one reason. Anyone who cant use a iron sight on an M4 shouldnt even USE an M4. IMO, anyway. Having a dot in the center of the screen that points where your weapon will shoot is just the usual console game way of playing and removes the need for interacting with your weapon which this game actually allows you to do and is so satisfying.

Of course, to make this whole idea work, the switch between 3rd person and weapn sights (right mouse button) should be limited by the required stage of switching to 1st person first, THEN to the sights. This is not only to techincally limit the 3rd person exploit but to also implement a sense of concentration everyone needs before using a weapon accurately, unless you're rapid-firing or panic-firing, in which case you can do it from 3rd person too. Sort of I turn a corner and there's a guy i didnt see there, and i shoot in panic and i probably miss him and he gets me.

This should promote the use of first person view during combat, but will not arbitrarely force anyone to use anything at any one time, keeping true to what i think it's the developer's idea of this game: freedom of choice.

I was curious about this, and new to the forum so I'm sure it's covered but...

Do you get accuracy penalties when in 3rd? To get full accuracy do you have to be ADS?

I really dont like the single dot they implement now. Maybe its my settings, my monitor, or just my eyeballs, but I often cant see it right away.

I do agree that removing the crosshair is a good idea. I don't agree that 3rd person is a problem though. There are plenty of servers with it disabled, so everyone is catered for.

Don't want to play with people using third person? Go on a server with it disabled. Simple as that.

I didnt want to tackle whether 3rd person is better or not. Just whether this simple limitation would settle both worlds in calling it a "fair" fight in a 3PP enabled server. I would.

In the mod 1st person was horribly clunky.

It is much better in standalone.

We need desperately to get many, many more 1PP-only servers and get a seperate hive before the gross imbalance 3PP brings is dealt with.

Love how when you play in 3rd person you aren't a "real man".  I still find 1st person clunky, annoying, unrealistic, and nauseating at times.  FOV only distorts your image and doesn't fix the issue.  Funny how a game like Gears of War which only has 3rd person doesn't generate this much bullshit about the perspective.....  Until technology advances and electronics get cheaper, we can't all have multiple monitor setups and virtual reality headgear to match the field of view of the human eye.

Tape a xhair on your monitor... (which I know some people will do) and 3PP has the advantage again... but yeah Im up for removing xhair from 1PP as well anyways, I just find it distracting and won't hip shoot except in an emergency where usually the crosshair is completely useless in terms of gauging your weapon direction anyways.

ruhroh. Someone doesn't understand that 3PP and FOV are two very different things. LMAO at comparing Gears of War, a 3rd person arcade shooter, to DayZ. Christ the types of people DayZ is bringing in is getting scary.

And this is why we can never have a legitimate debate because people like you put your fingers in your ears and "la la la la" in the face of incontrovertable facts.

I like the idea of removing the aiming crosshair. While a good start, would not really address the issue most 1PP only supporters seem to be (to me) most vocal about. Which is being able to see past walls/corners with out exposing them self's to the danger that would normally entail if they were in 1PP.

So because they failed at fixing the controls its my fault? classy argument.

It's actually worse since movement is even more clunky and you have that constantly changing mouse acceleration thing.

Being obnoxious and elitist doesn't help either.

Gears of war is a single player, arcade shooter...it also has regenerating health when you stand behind cover, and enables you to peek fire from the same cover with almost perfect accuracy and minimal exposure - do you want that in DayZ as well? I think I'd kill myself if forced to play a pvp game like that; two players facing each other behind two walls, both endlessly waiting for the other to make a move so that they can do a perfectly aimed peekshot. Guaranteed stalemate (unless one of them is an idiot).

As for 3PP ranged pvp games? World of Tanks springs to mind as the only one played at any serious level, because it has a huge part of its coding dedicated to dealing with visibility round corners and spotting enemies.

Oh and FOV is the same in 1PP and 3PP, just shifted back a few metres, it's still the same angle shown on your screen, the FOV argument just shows up people that don't know what they're talking about.

EDIT: lol I just found out Gears does have multiplayer...and it looks absolutely terrible. MP added as an attempt to extend the longevity of the game so that people don't take it to the 2nd hand store once they finish the main story I guess

It doesn't touch the core issue of someone being able to lie on top of some building or wherever and scoping out the vicinity with nobody even having the slightest chance of spotting him.

Sorry, went off on a rant in my last post...but yeah xhair on screen doesn't change a thing with what the 3PP (as it's currently implemented*) issue is

*basically if 3PP players added this disclaimer onto how 1PP players talk about 3PP you'd probably all get a lot less worked up

Tape a xhair on your monitor...

Bingo. Hardcore rainbow six fans know bout this. Place a sticker (dot, X, etc.) on center screen when sighted in. Peel off when done.

People actually fire their weapons from 3PP?

It happens. On short to medium range it can do the job if there's a crosshair or the guy has the skills...or simply luck.
