Why DayZ is like a cute little puppy

Recommended Posts

.

This game is a huge success RIGHT NOW.

Does anyone of you understand what this means?

This means it is good as it is, and even if rocket would stop developing it any further in this second, it would still stay alive and kicking, with a huge active community and be still the best game around.

That alone is fascinating.

On the other hand this also means: developing it further into any kind of "direction" only means developing it away from where it is right now.

It may still be fantastic, but different.

Somehow I don't want to lose it. I want it to stay like it is right now.

Like a little cute puppy which you wish would forever stay that cute little puppy, and not grow to a 100 pounds big dog, which is also your best friend but a bit annoying sometimes, like when you have to take him out for a walk in the middle of the night....

that's what i mean with "becoming different"...

I think the fact that this is an Alpha and it already has so much, but at the same time has loads of things to come and make it an even deeper experience.

Heh, I know what you mean ;)

I've got faith though, once the changes that have come have bedded in and we've got used to them, they're generally, if controversially, for the better.

I was slightly sceptical of the melee to start with, it sort of felt like zombies were less dangerous and I guess they are. But after sneaking around Berezino tonight and taking out stray zombies quickly and silently, man I felt like a proper zombie apocalypse survivor :) It still takes a bit of forethought to pull it off, and you have to be really careful not to attract your own personal zombie apocalypse, plus if you don't time your swing right you could be in all kinds of trouble.

Looking forward to see how this mechanic is developed. It'd be cool if there was a chance that your hatchet would get stuck in a dead zombie and you needed to pull it out. You can't have too many "oh shit!" moments in a game like this ;)

I want everything to change and bend and possibly break. I don't even give a fuck if it turns into some sort of hairless cat with googly eyes and a faint smell of rotten fish. I'm still gonna be eatin' beanz and hiding in bushes.

EDIT: I do really like cute puppies though.

I know what you mean.

I think the mod can improve a lot and certainly become more polished... but there's always the danger of feature overload, or of it heading in a completely wrong direction (such as becoming more gamey and less sim-like)

Agreed, but fuck puppies are annoying lol. That fact alone possibly makes your analogy even more correct hahah.

I love the analogy but lets take it a bit further. Any dog owner can tell you that as cute as a puppy may be, they can chew your shoes and crap on your carpet. Treat them right and they will be loyal and be a friend to you for life. Raised poorly, they will be vicious and dangerous. Let's all keep this puppy from becoming Cujo.

A good dev, which I think rocket is, doesn't change the parts of a game that people like, they just add stuff to it.

Exactly this. Polish? YES! Tweaking YES! New features? THINK HARD ABOUT THESE. What I'm saying is that While polish and tweaking will almosy always improve the game, (including debugging etc), adding new features can often be a very subjective matter, where you need to think about who will dislike and like it, and even if alot of people want it, is it staying true to your bigger picture, and the immersion etc of the game.

By catering to what most people want, you will edge closer and closer to that dreaded gamey-ness, more than a simulator, and the original players will burn your effigy as people are pandered to excessively

Well I'm tried of the puppy and the little messes it leaves around.

Untill then, there is alot of fleas and ticks that like to jump on the puppy those too can be removed but only if the owner takes steps to apply the right kind of flea/tick spray to do so.

Like any good puppy it needs to be trained well and as it grows it will be a better dog. Right now the puppy has little training and it's initial cuteness wears off in a few weeks. Thus you are left with a messy flea infested puppy.

But there is hope like any GOOD owner they will work to train the puppy if not then no one will want to be around the dog.
