Default is whatever meters you get when you click "default"

I recommend 1,5 km atleast. if that counts.

Its measured in meters yes.

With an i5 3570k @ 4.4Ghz and a GTX 780 mine is...

preferredObjectViewDistance=1465.9341;

I haven't modified mine, it's just what the game gave me.

There are a few View distance options in the .cfg.

Overall

Object

Shadow

I assumed that the OP meant Overall but some clarification is now needed

I believe that "preferredObjectViewDistance" is the setting that controls your overall render distance. I could be wrong though, I haven't spent a great deal of time looking through the config as it's been running fine for me right out of the box, so apologies if I'm incorrect.

Overall is the terrain I believe. Basically the distance where everything disappears into the mist (actually just labelled viewdistance=)

Object is the likes of Buildings, Trees etc

Shadow........ well self explanatory.

Nice one OP, happy it's playable for you now.

If its anything like Arma 2 and 3, that value will tell the game when to render objects in the distance, not the actual distance you can look.

shadowZDistance=100;                         = Shadows, not really important tbh

viewDistance=2000;                              = How far you can see terrain, not the object on the terrain. DayZ has a "kinda" Fog Of War, which is controlled by this setting.

preferredObjectViewDistance=1600;    = How far the object are being rendered. Stuff like houses, trees, barrels, rocks and what not.

This is mine atm and it works great, i edited it my self.

Ah, you are indeed correct... Must have missed that.

Mine's set at 2400. I thought 1500 seemed a bit low compared to what I can see in-game...

I missed that completely and assumed that they'd basically condensed render and object render distances into one setting.
