Types of Guns: Read if you don't know the typesi

Recommended Posts

I imagined there would be people who don't know what kind of guns there are so I made this in my spare time.

Handguns:  Guns that are held in your hand and can be easily held with one hand. Small and compact.

Subcategories:

Revolvers:  Handguns that have a "revolving" cylinder containing the cartridges. (Note: Cartridge includes the bullet at the top and the explosive that propels it)

Pistol: Handguns that have a barrel integral to the chamber.

Machine Pistol:  Broad term that has a very blurry line with sub machine guns (or SMG) and is basically a pistol that is automatic.

SMG:  Guns that are small and compact, smaller than a rifle but bigger than a handgun, use pistol rounds (9mm, 45 ACP, .40, 50 AE) and are automatic.

Rifles:  Guns that are held in your hand and can range to a compact size like a SMG to a long and bulky sniper rifle.  Difference between SMG's is that they fire rifle rounds (.223, 7.62, .50 cal) Can be semi auto or auto.

Subcategories:

Assault Rifle:  Rifles that are automatic or select fire.  Fire intermediate cartridges.

Carbine:  Assault rifles that are generally smaller and more compact than most assault rifles.

Battle Rifle:  Semi auto or select fire rifles that fire a high power rifle cartridge ex. 7.62.

Sniper Rifle:  Rifles used for very long range engagement. Usually semi auto.

DMR:  Rifles that fill the role between what assault rifles and carbines fill (infantryman) and what Sniper rifles fill (sniper)

Machine Guns:  Rifles that can or are usually belt fed (a belt of rounds is fed into the gun) and automatic.

                  Subcategories:

LMG:  Light machine guns, MG's that can are light and can be carried by a person.

HMG: Heavy machine guns, MG's that are heavy, usually have a tripod, and cannot be carried by a person.

Shotguns: Self explanatory, or so I hope.  Also called Scatter guns.  Guns that DO NOT have a rifled barrel and general cartridge is a shell containing pellets which spread out.

Battle Rifle: Semi auto or select fire rifles that fire a high power cartridge ex. 7.62.

Sniper Rifle:  Rifles used for very long range engagement. Usually semi auto.

DMR:  Rifles that fill the role between what assault rifles and carbines fill (infantryman) and what Sniper rifles fill (sniper)

Only thing wrong here, is that Sniper Rifles are usually bolt action.

Battle rifles and DMRs are essentially the same thing, except DMRs usually have medium/long range scopes on them whereas Battle Rifles are iron sights or reflex sights.

May just want to edit this, but Scatterguns are actually not the same as shotguns.

They are very similar, however, scatterguns are intended to be a more mobile form of the combat shotgun, with more pellets and a wider blast range.

M14 is a battle rifle, but M14 with a scope is a DMR? The DMR fills the gap from Assault rifle to sniper rifle, it IS usually a battle rifle. And 'pistol' should be called an automatic.

Good post though, I hope some one finds it useful.

I think you are talking about the MK14 which is basically the M14 but modified to fit the DMR role.  Battle rifles are service rifles, or usually are.  The modified Mk14 made it more suited to the DMR role.

Think of this, you have a M4 with a red dot, then a M4 with a heavy barrel and a long range scope.  It changes the role, doesn't it? That's why the M14 switches from BR to DMR, although really it is still a BR.

Right that is what I said lol. It is still a BR, but is a DMR.

Just saying DMR as a cetegory is tricky is all. Cause it could be a DMR and still be in another category, like BR or AR. Funny how you can alter a rifles role just by some optics being added. Really anything can be a DMR if your DM is using it.
