That's expected with this game.  People either receive information from a friend about how great it is, and jump into it with little to no research.

 

Thus someone dies and loses a few days worth of progression, not knowing about DayZ's permadeath.  Quickly realizing it's not their cup of tea, they quit.

 

 

And then there are those of us who play this game because of how harsh it is :)
