The Soviet Connection.

Thank you! I was going to post something exactly like this but you've said it alot better then I would have been able to. I feel like this is not only a good suggestion, but absolutely necessary. If people want to play with guns that don't fit the setting there's always the mod.

Op I like your idea about making Chernarus more Russian and can see why you don't like seeing so much western stuff. The reason for the western gear and weapons in my opinion is that the devs are modeling chernarus after the Czech Republic, which has a far amount of western weapons and vehicles. here is the Czech Republic military     http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_of_the_Czech_Republic

I thought about that too, but here is my reasoning as follows: Yes, Chernarus is of course modeled after the Czech Republic geographically, and also militarily in a fashion( if you you remember dead and infected soldiers from the mod, they were in what i believe is Czech gear.)

So, it does make sense to have some modern military equipment such as Humvees and all that. However, Chernarus is not the Czech Republic, it is its own little nation wherever. It has no reason to have developed economically, so it would be like many other small Eastern-European countries that have not managed to get very far out of the Soviet time-capsule. This is evident by the lack of modern structures, industry and obvious reliance on agriculture. While it would make sense that the CDF would have purchased what it could afford of new equipment, most of its forces would remain with Soviet or 90's Russian stuff.

That is my logic behind this :)

I just want to bump this because of all the other useless topics that directly contradict this, Chernarus and everything.

Some usefull points are raised here by all members.

there should definitely be a focus on soviet gear but NATO were involved in the outbreak and the US before that explaining the M4s.  The outbreak is set after 2017 (cereal pack dates) so modern equipment (like AK12s) are plausible.

No... Just no Ak 21's... The invasion took place way before the AK-12 has even been considered for adoption, even today the official sign is the AK-12 isn't even part of state trials for the Ratnik system. The most modern russian arm should be the AK-74m.

Also the gas mask is perfectly fine, it's a slightly modified czech m10m gas mask, at least it is better than BF3's russian engineer wearing a US gas mask...

But I agree they need more eastern technology, hell why are they adding a Ak-74m before a AKM or normal AK-74? AKM would be easier as we already have it's ammo in game and it would 100% be in Chernarus, and the AK-74 would be better as the CDF uses it as it's standard firearm! I just hope they add these before more M16's and M14's...

PS a ssh-68 would be cool too

I know a lot of people are hesitant for the game turning into a military simulation instead of a zombie survival one, but I really would like to see a full set of CDF infantry gear implemented before any future sets are done. In fact, I would be perfectly fine if they put off adding new military outfits for months as long as CDF stuff is implemented. CDF camo jacket and pants, CDF PASGT helmet and patrol cap, rigging and flak jacket... This sort of stuff should be the most common available.

You would be surprised what people have stored away. Just look at the recent protests in Ukraine. Old soviet gear should be a good mid tier equipment between civilian and "tacticool mil sim stuff"

http://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/ukraine-eu-protest1.jpg?w=720&h=480&crop=1

Tier classes I would like to see are:

Civilian - most common, t-shirts, tracksuits, graphic tees with cyrillic script, jeans, cargo pants, leather jackets, ushankas with ear flaps up)

Hunting/Military Surplus (WW2 to 1980s)/Civilian Professional (police, firefighter, etc)

Military: CDF most common, but also Russian and American in smaller quantities (USMC)

Special Forces: Ultra rare, more a symbol of pride (like having a jacket with spetznatz or Force Recon patches)

Their helmet is already in game, but I agree

The ballistic helmet? I'm not that good with military identification, but I'm pretty sure it's some form of a MICH helmet, which the US Army now uses:

The CDF uses the older PASGT, which was used from 1983 to the mid 2000s.

This is essentially all the CDF gear I'd like to see in the future:

Then Russian VDV Motor Rifles:

Then finally, USMC:

Lore is good. Lore helps immersion. Immersion is good.

This is therefore double good, if my Orwellian syntax is true. Beans, sir.

Don't know why you're using models from Arma 2, all that gear is greatly outdated. VDV hasn't worn that kinda stuff since the 90's.

But stuff like combat shirts with big US flags plastered on the arms really irritates me. It makes no sense, and prevents me from a good pilot outfit.

The MICH is another one, ugly ass helmet, no reason to be there.

I guess I was wrong, it is a MICH. So I guess a PASGT would be better but I highly doubt we will get it as we already have the MICH. I would also much like to see the CDF equipment first, then followed by either VDV or normal russian troops equipment.

The russian equipment should look like this: release22.jpg

This would be an accurate represntation of russian troops about the time of the invasion, a bit before digi flora and Ratnik but after the VSR and ssh-68 stuff which was only used for a couple of years after the USSR.

I just checked the official site, and it states that the soldiers stationed near the Chernarussian border are Guard Motor Rifles, not VDV

If any USA helmet should be added, it should be the USMC Light Weight Helmet. Much sexier and it makes sense given the lore.

It kind of bothers me that people here often argue for realism but at the same time get completely upset when someone suggests adding 'overpowered' (this thread uses that word a lot) weapons like an RPG-7 (Explosives), RPK (LMGs/GPMGs) and SVD (Semi-automatic sniper rifles), even though those would be prevalent. Is it seriously a big deal that weapons which could arguably require less-skill than others exist in a game? I'd think that finding any of those types of weapons would be something to strive for, whereas having only civilian guns and maybe an AK or M4 here and there honestly makes it boring, whether realistic or not.

Are the FNX-45 and Colt Python really realistic? No. Are they fun and add necessary variety to the game? Yes. DayZ has always lacked revolvers, and has never really put emphasis on sidearms.

The FNX is realistic since its a widely-used pistol throughout the police forces of the world.

FN pistols really aren't that widespread. Anyway, in an Eastern European country, the makarov would probably still be the norm.

However, the CZ-75P is planned, which, if it had a much higher spawn chance than the FN, would make more sense.

Makarov PM would be an important implementation though, as it be historically present and is a popular civilian PDF all over the world.

This suggestion has my vote as well.

I found it weird to find UK vests and other stuff in the Czech republic.

Or even certain food and drinks that seems not to be regional.

If going for realism, then keep it real i'd say.

Here is what I would want to see in regards to CDF equipment. Its a combination of western and eastern gear (the TTsko fatigues already in game aren't the same thing afaik; there's no Chernarussian flag, the striped blue and white shirt shouldnt be there, colors are different):

@Pyrozite:I play Metro and I do agree with your opinion. One thing i'm curious about is why aren't there any flags flopping about anywhere? I've come across a soviet symbol painted on one of the buildings but that's not much, really.

So, I believe that there should be a focus on more Soviet/Russian idiosyncrasies in the game. More eastern themed clothing, a huge emphasis on military equipment especially. Why would there be a load of SUV's, M4's, UK equipment etc. in a country that has little link to the West?

Replace the American gasmask with the Soviet PBF 'Gorilla' mask, maybe throw in a GP-5, PMG, GP-6. Why have a UK assault vest or tac vest when stuff like 6B3 armour or rigs and harnesses from 1990's Russia would make more sense? A kevlar helmet? What about the Ssh-68? Or a tankers helmet? Put in AK's, makarov's, stechkins, kiparis', SVD's. Why would there be Humvee's, throw UAZ 69's, 469's, 452's, Gaz 24's, Gaz Tigr's, lada's, zaporozhets etc on that shit.

OP you fail to remember that people can have imported cars, and that [from what I remember from somewhere in the wiki] foreign troops were called in, after the Chernarus Defence Force fell through, to fight the zombies and so probably left a lot of stuff behind in terms of weapons.

Skodas and Ladas are confirmed [the Skoda Rapid gets me so damn erect]; the question is, why the fuck would you want a Lada??

If you want to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R., go play it. Don't turn DayZ into it, it's a different game entirely with a realistic aesthetic rather than a dark and visually badass/creepy aesthetic.

I don't actually, I was merely emphasising the need for greater focus on soviet vehicles. Of course it would have imported vehicles, Chernarus was a democracy and a free market. However, they should be much, much rarer than the soviet rustbuckets.

As I have aforementioned, Chernarus is a rather poor state, with most of the populous relying on agriculture. They mostly would not be able to afford imports, and, considering the kind of place it is, most young people would move to get an education, eliminating the demand for exclusive import cars, and since an older population would remain, they would already have grown up making do with what they had, so they wouldn't need much change in vehicles that were already left behind after its independence from the Soviet Union.

This is evident in the kind of vehicles they made for Chernarus in Arma 2.

As for the foreign intervention, yes it is likely they left a lot of equipment behind if they were to abandon Chernarus to fight the global epidemic, however, it is likely they would destroy a lot of it to avoid enemy capture, and what did remain would have quickly been scattered all over Chernarus and out by remaining militias and panicking civilians.

But what used to belong to the Chernarus military and police forces, mostly Kalashnikovs and Russian shotguns, would still be found in police stations and military bases, because, where did they have to go? The soldiers and officers probably manned their posts until infected or killed off by armed militias.

But in the end everyone fuckin died so who gives a shit >:C
