Hey guys, I finally managed my way to the NW airfield and there are only handguns here.

Is that the norm, and if so - where can I find some bigger guns?

In any military base you will definitely find bigger guns. Look for them here http://dayzdb.com/map/chernarusplus#4.055.128

You can find weapons all over the map, the military areas are still some of the best.

It's all luck of the draw, I'm afraid - or maybe someone else has already had a look round and taken some of the heavier weapons.

M4- Military buildings

Mosin- Military buildings, cars, some residential houses

 

Unfortunately those are the only two rifles currently in the game.  If you're seeing lots of open doors, that means someone has already gone through and picked it clean, so I wouldn't expect too much if you see that.
