Unfortunately, DayZ requires Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7 SP1 to run. 

So your friend will have to upgrade to Vista or Windows 7 in order to play DayZ.

I personally recommend Windows 7.

We are very sorry, but support for Windows XP is not planned. Please try to run the game only on Windows Vista SP2 or higher.

Besides that Microsoft will drop the support for Win XP in 3 months. So your friend shouldn't go online with xp then and upgrade anyway.
