DayZ is NOT fun for new players, which makes me worried.

Recommended Posts

I'll try to be more police than some other people, and I didn't read every post so hopefully no one worded this exactly as I did.

But I did read that other people have said, "This game is not for everyone", and it needs to stay like that. I'm sorry, it's not to be elitist and yes some things need improving (It's in Alpha, let's not forget here), but a lot of us are afraid that there is going to be a large outcry from the CoD / Battlfield / Console community to help streamline a lot of features to make it more accessible. Things like more HUD pop ups, easier gun mechanics, more guns popping up everywhere and easier navigation.

We pray and hope Rocket will ignore anything that will detract from the gritty, realistic-feeling of this game such as making it more arcade-y and more about getting into squad-based firefights instead of what it's supposed to be about; More of a simulator of survival that also happens to have zombies cluttering every spot that need to be avoided or quietly taken down.

Things like smoother animations, less clunky movement, and smoother / faster transition when manipulating your inventory are things that will hopefully be worked on in time, as issues like changing from holding a can of beans to pulling out a pistol currently take like 10 seconds which is insane when someone is running at you with an axe (I'm no quick-draw McGraw gunslinger, but I can fire a primary weapon, sling it and unholster and fire a pistol in about 2 to 3 seconds and I'm not military).

But going back to "It's an Alpha" statement, understand that Rocket is working on a LOT of things right now, and their priorities aren't really geared towards making what I listed better. They're working on zombies, AI, geometry collisions and adding items and cities into the map. Once they have everything IN the game that they want, they'll work on overhauling animations, movements and stuff like that because fixing bugs would be pointless if they're not even finished making the game.

If Rocket worked only on the bugs right now, once they started changing the game, they would be back to square 1 with bug fixes.

At any rate, this game is not easy. It's punishing, and it's not even finished. We're supposed to be play testing and giving feedback. It even warns you not to buy this if your only goal is just to play and have fun UNLESS you're also willing to accept you're playing with a broken and unfinished product. It seems like your friend missed that, and perhaps you didn't really drive that home when convincing him to buy the game.

It is impossible for everyone to like every game, if your friend doesn't like it, it probably means your friend, uhhm, doesn't like it.  There is nothing wrong with the game in that sense or your friend, he just has different taste.  There is no reason your friend should like all the same games as you.

If as you say "Dayz is not fun for new players" how come me and every fan of the mod/SA loves it for what it offers them? If it wasn't fun Dean wouldn't have created a SA.

I am new to Dayz and am thoroughly addicted. It was clear from the first second I needed to learn how to navigate, figure out where I was on the map, and survive. I did lots of Google research, and played many hours at the same time. I have been an avid Xbox360'er for years, playing single player play through s and online (COD for example). This is my first MMO and my first PC game since 2000 (starcraft). The realism and difficulty of the game is what makes it so appealing, in my opinion. I keep a printed map and http://dayzdb.com/map#3.053.033 up in a browser, and having a compass is a huge help (obviously). I've had some character reset issues, which have been frustrating, but honestly it ended up helping me figure out how to gear up quickly. This is an amazing game, despite it's being in Alpha.

Just started playing a few days ago... Died numerous times...

For me the most frustrating was literally the first hour (or after being experienced first 15-30 min).  So far I have found starting is a crap shoot... Mainly hinged on how fast you can find a semi-decent weapon and the zombie spawns.

The seemingly zombies eagle x-ray vision and walk through walls glitch really messed me up at first and can be frustrating until you get at least a crowbar/shovel.

The day/night cycle was frustrating as well, starting a new game in night mode stinks.  Was stuck in night mode after my first death,

just a noob's opinion.

Thread title should be:

DayZ is NOT for everyone, which is totally normal.

i dont see how any new player can get hooked on this game without having a heart pounding experience while immersed. without dayz's classic horror music to set the mood its just boring for someone who isn't already attached to the game. I cannot understand why they took it out, they fiddled with something fundamentally important and broke it.

this is a very very bad design decision, please ask them to bring back dayz's ambient music

DayZ is not for everyone. I jumped into Alpha and never played the mod and loved it and have over 300 hours. My buddy played a bit on my account and gave up after 15 minutes.

Well, maybe your friend just sucks at describing and is not the kind of guy for dayz? DayZ is not for everyone. And that's good because we don't want all the kiddies here. DayZ is supposed to be harsh and unforgiving.

I think : The harder the better.

certainly NOT!

If the new players don't like DayZ, well sucks for them, there are plenty of other games out there.

Bottom line : If you don't like DayZ being though, GTFO.

EDIT: Oh, and if you don't like being shot, watch your surroundings.

EDIT2: Holy shit, I never got so many beans on a single post, keep 'em coming :P :D

man, it's this mindset that's gonna kill any interest people have in getting this game. just because YOU have played the shit out of this game doesnt mean you have the end-all opinion on anything, especially if entails chasing new players away because us playing it are all raving douchebags to anyone who "thinks the game is too hard"

I have played DayZ since the mod came out. I love it and I have bought the alpha, which is not bad.

Today, I bought the alpha for a friend of mine who has never played the game and the experience for him was in a nutshell, boring and frustrating.

I played the game with him to try and teach him how the game worked. If you are new and have no clue what's happening, then clearly the game will be frustrating. That's why I wanted to meet him in game to help him out.

The only problem? Meeting up with him was a complete disaster. He obviously had no clue where he was and his surroundings he described only slightly assisted me.

It's not like the mod where it tells you where you are when you log in or spawn. We are just left smack bang in the middle of nowhere.

So, after spending about 1.5 hours running in different directions and around in circles, we finally meet each other. We briefly enjoyed about 30 seconds of reunion before a bandit came out of a house and shot both of us.

Joy. Back to square one.

Needless to say, my friend was not impressed and really could not bare spending another 1.5 hours trying to find each other and he definitely won't play the game again unless I am on or unless I hassle him to give it another try.

This has been suggested before, to allow friends to spawn with each other. At the very least when you both die. Obviously, it would be stupid to allow people to spawn with a friend who is already alive with their full grade military equipment. But allow fresh spawns to spawn together.

I know naysayers will say 'finding each other is part of the experience!' Well, I personally don't believe spending half a day meeting up and dying then meeting up again to be a part of the dayZ experience.

Well, I guess I could just kill myself and hope for a spawn closer to my friend by clicking the 'respawn' butto- Oh wait.

Another suggestion regarding this functionality is to make it optional for servers to have this setting.

=============

Something needs to be done to allow experienced players like myself to assist new people who I am trying to introduce this game to. This game is extremely punishing, but also extremely rewarding. I need a good chance to show my friend the rewarding side of this game and so far, I have had none.

I would like to discuss this with my fellow DayZ players.

Sorry OP, but this isn't about holding Bambi's hands. The bottom line here is that your friend has two options open to him. Learn to read Cyrillic text the way most of us have so you can determine your location based on road signs, or learn to navigate with another method such as map/sun/stars.

Your entire complaint is "My friend is new and doesn't know how to navigate."

Sounds like a "You" problem.

I think you missunderstand. There are new payers to the sandbox that want to change the whole sandbox, and that doesn't sit well with many people that like the sandbox the way it is.

yea yea, get off your lawn. we get it. just because you have more hours played than someone else doesnt entitle you to jackshit. the same case for noobs. we are unpaid testers, and the fact is currently this game (and community) is terrible to new players. i dont know exactly what should change, but GASP im not on the dev team so who the fuck cares?

Wow another thread title that completely ignores any notion that people may form differing opinions.

Thread to be disregarded and treated as lame troll attempt.

No, no, no...no and 10000 no!

1) If your friend was not instantly hooked the second he spawned, the very core concept of DayZ is lost on him.

2) If your friend was frustrated by what he didn't know, instead of being intrigued by the unknown and unfamiliar, wrong game.

3) If your first instinct was to try and "meet" with a friend, once again, the very idea of DayZ is lost here.

get off your high horse man... "if you didnt love it the first 7sec you played then you just dont get it" is the shittiest thing I've ever read here. It's a damn game man and people play games with their friends. if the game makes it hard to do so, people will play other games. I don't think they should make it easier to find people, i like the feeling of being completely lost in chernarus, but there's really no need to condescend to someone who just wants to play an awesome game with friends.

The main difference DayZ has above other games it that it does have no difficulty level.

New players are confronted with exactly the same difficulty that veterans are used too.

If the new player lacks the ability or appeal to manage this steep learning curve, he will quit the game.

In other games the exact same player could chose to lower the difficulty or use an ingame cheat to balance his inability.

That's also the reason why games like Battlefield or Call of Duty appeal to the masses, they have a very easy learning curve especially in multiplayer.

Death is without any meaning in those games. If a player dies 30 times in a single battle, its not a problem.

He still gets points for killing other players, regardless on how often he died himself. 1:1 Ratio is common in those games, which I call Kamikaze.

Call of Duties "Search and Destroy" Mode is an exception but I've encountered that the majority prefers TDM due to the reasons listed above.

...and even SaD can not hide the heavily arcade weapon physics of CoD.

I could not stand Call of Duty after Modern Warfare 1, which in my opinion was the only good game of the franchise. Millions of others think otherwise.

They totally messed it up in Modern Warfare 2, as there was more traffic in the air, due to kill-streaks... than on the New York Airport.

...but I enjoyed the ability to launch an atomic nuke and win the game by myself in MW2   :D .

________

Long story short, if you don't like a game... don't play it. There is not a single game which appeals to everyone.
