Bug tracker, how to make it easier for the devs

Recommended Posts

I have been reading through the reports for the past half an hour and there are a lot of reports that are unnecessary or plain unhelpful making the ones that matter wait in a long list of nothingness. A few tips to help the devs so they can go through the bug reports faster and don't have to filter through rubbish and therefore can spend more time actually fixing stuff:

1. Make sure you use the search function before you file a report. This is very important. Just in the first couple of minutes of reading the reports there were at least 20 reports only for character resets (and there are many many more). Put yourself in the devs shoes and be a little more considerate before you post your report and use the search function to make sure the same report hasn't been filed before.

2. Steps to reproduce: This is a very important part of the bug reporting process as without it, it will just take longer for the devs to figure out the bug. Don't leave it empty or write e.g. "I suggest you don't reproduce it." in the box. It is unhelpful and a waste of time.

3. Make sure your report is detailed. Especially when it comes to hardware problems. e.g. Only writing "I have XX gfx card and my FPS is terrible, fix it immediately" is not going to help you nor the devs, do anything about it.

4. The bug tracker is not a wishlist or a suggestion box, keep that to the forums (there will be a Suggestion section on the forums eventually), and use the bug tracker for bugs.

5. Again similar to number 4, missing features are not bugs. Reporting that the walkie talkie you just found is unusable for example will just clutter the bug tracker. Please don't report missing features as bugs, there are so many reports about missing features that I started praying for the devs and I am an atheist :p

6. Most important of all, do your homework before you file a report in the bug tracker. Don't report bugs that are already fixed in the Rolling or Pending updates. Also make sure that what you are reporting (if you have not found it in the bug tracker via the search function) is indeed a bug by searching the forums and google and try to reproduce it before you file a report.

I know these are obvious and straight-forward for some people but looking at the reports it apparently isn't for a lot of others. :(
