A long trip North

I'm still at a point where I don't really know where the hell I'm going. I found two parts of a map, but died soon after and haven't found any since. I looked up a map online, but I don't always know where I'm starting off, so that's only so helpful. One of the most useful thing I've found so far is the the compass, so I used it to go North hoping to run into an airbase or something new.

I hit town after town and found some good stuff, felt confident in being able to keep myself alive for the first time, but eventually got to what must be the end of the map because it became bland, short grasslands to the horizon. After 5 minutes of wandering, they were still stretching off into the distance.

I died heading Southwest trying to find a source of food, but never came across anything but trees and empty roads.

I never played the mod, but I'm guessing there were ways to eat and stay alive in the wilderness put in place in that game aside from carrying it in your pack, so here's hoping to getting some of that in the standalone!

Sounds like you were having a great time :D

 

But yes, ways to survive in the wilderness will be added. Although that might not help you when you leave the map. Next time head south east, as the map's end in the west looks just like the one in the north.

More towns etc to be added up that way too so don't write it off completely

LOL. Reminds me of what happend to a friend of mine in the mod. He walked for 2 straight hours "of the map". He called me and asked me what was wrong. He had been eating and drinking the whole journey so it took a while for him to die. He feld like somebody who got lost in a dessert.

 

Use different things to navigate, like the sun, clouds or the stars. Anywhere you are just walk south-east. You may walk passed al the in land villages but eventually you will hit the coast. From there it is easy to find your way to the cities. As soon as you get there. Take some food, drinks and some basic weapon to defend yourself from Z's and then get the hell away from the coast.

I must confess I tend to try and play daytime servers only, Ive just found nightimte scavenging while alone less fun, so I try and use the Sun when I can.

After what felt like an eternity in the woods, seeing the open plains was a relief...that is until I realized where I was and that I was S.O.L.

What I find fun is when I start at the coast, I work out where I am on one of the online maps, then plan a journey from that point, working out which towns I will visit etc. That way you always know where your heading. 

 

If you do get lost look at the last place you were and look at the map compared to what you see. Identify larger buildings in towns or look for the road signs as your leaving/entering I know they are in Russian but you can see the English equivalent on the maps. 

 

Its really good fun exploring and tracking progress, Personally I have now ventured the furthest north I have ever been and plan to go further Just need to work out which direction to go first!
