My DayZ Experience: First Time Banditry

Recommended Posts

After playing SA for this last week as a "Good Guy" (avoiding conflict, not necessarily helping people), I have decided to try my hand at being a proper bandit.

The rules were this:

Try to look the part. (Bandana, Sunglasses/mask, Hoodie)

Don't loot any of my own food.

Interact as much as possible.

No KOS.

A literal "Holdup".

Must RP a bandit with a life story.

Every victim must remove their shoes.

I spawned in Kamyshovo on a 30+ pop server and proceeded to pick up a Splitting Axe, then I drank from the well 'til I was full. Equipping as much Bandit looking gear as possible.

I then made my way to Elektro, knowing I could find the most people there. On my way, near the train station leading to Elektro, I came across what looked like a fresh spawn with a mask I wanted (Hoxton Mask). I waited for him to walk into a building with one entrance/exit and I stood in the doorway and told him if he puts a single can of food, his mask, and his shoes on the ground he could live and I would walk away.

He laughed and said this is the best hold up he has had and did as I asked and we walked away from each other.

With my new mask and can of tuna in hand, I made my way to town. I stealthily made my way to the fire station and found an FNX pistol with no ammo.

As I left the station I saw a man in a hoodie, Hunter pants, and a baseball bat approaching. Knowing a melee fight could be dangerous, I drew my pistol and faked having ammo.

I told him to drop a few valuables and his shoes, and he would not become a lead pin cushion. I received from him a clip and a water bottle and I let him loose.

After I got the clip I loaded my gun and proceeded to do the same to around 6 more people, waiting until I had the upper-hand before making my verbal connection.

My demise came when I went into a building and teleported through the wall, falling to the soft concrete where I then broke my legs.

A man came up to me and asked if I needed help, I dropped him my gun and told him to end it all for me.

He, reluctantly, did so and pointed the gun at my head. This whole time, in character, I told him my story.

The last thing anyone told asked me was "Sir, do you have any final words."

I looked dead into the barrel of my trusty pistol and said.

"Atleast... I got some good shoes."

I laughed a lot at your last words. Unfortunately, not many bandits I've met have been quite so in character  ;)

awesome story.

If you do it properly, even the most well armed players are rob-able by a man with a pistol.

People have to eat or drink soon, or put themselves in a building where they can be held up with no chance to turn around and draw weapon.

Be smart and banditry is fun, suspenseful, and rewarding. Without the need to kill anything that moves.

As long as they remove their shoes, of course.

Banditry is not simply a "Let's rack up a huge body count!" play style.

It is way more interesting, in my opinion, to rob people and come out on top without any death.

It adds an aspect of game play that is not only different, but makes the game interesting for everyone of any play style. You can be a pacifist, a hero, or another bandit, and you are just as likely to be the victim as anyone else.

This form of banditry is not only challenging and rewarding, but it gives everyone a reason to look over their shoulders while they loot. Without it, the game becomes a mindless item grind/sparse zombie shooter.

I'm proud to say, I get to be amongst the members of the community that make people fear looting high-pop towns.

Not to mention how fun it is listening to people's reaction as they remove their shoes.

That's how bandits should be. The problem with most of the "bandits" (KoS kiddies) in the game right now is that they force other people to either avoid player interaction all together or KoS in high risk areas. If I'm playing with my squad, we try to hold people up, cuff them, take a screenshot with them then let them go (sometimes taking a bit of food or water if we have none), but we're usually either forced to KoS on the airfields (North-west/east, we don't camp Balota like some people) because we can't take the risk, or we get fired at first and have to engage with no chance of talking to them.

I love you. It is terrifying when you run into someone with a gun and you only have a melee, usually they just kill me, but the ones who rob me make it more suspenseful, by, am I going to be allowed to live? Am I going to get executed? Is he trying to make my death suspenseful? Is he going to poison me, luckily, I've never had to give up my wellies yet. Ran into a couple of fully decked out guys with Mosins, I don't know if I should be happy, or a little disturbed, that all they took from me was some blood.

This game needs more of this.  Just wish the non imaginative, non creative, dull & dense KoS baddies would realize how much better this game would be with more of this.

Here's my beans.  Gotta catch me slippin' for my shoes though  B)

I would say instead of Bandits we should rename these players Highwaymen

Good story .
