will we ever get ballistic chest armor?

Recommended Posts

like with different levels and maybe let us craft it by finding steel or ceramic inserts for them that degrades as being shot at?

it really gives people under fire in surprised circumstance a chance to get into cover.

I hope there will not be any armour that can stop a 7.62 rifle round through the chest. 5.56 bodyarmour? Hell yeah.

Why not? Body armor stops 7.62 all the time, and the standard 5.56mm is supposed to penetrate armor better than standard 7.62mm, because it has a steel penetrator whereas 7.62 ball does not.

there are some youtube videos that shows steel inserts taking multiple 7.62x51mm rounds from a hunting rifle with zero penetration. the only problem ive seen from steel inserts is crazy spalling but other wise they seem to be more durable than ceramic.

Body armour stops 7.62, but the impact still usually crush the organs and does permanent damage. Note how I am talking about the civilian 'soft' bodyarmour, not the metal-plated vests the US military wears. And things like military Dragon Vests(soft vests capable of stopping stabbing and 7.62) are far too exotic for DayZ.

yea dragon vests can be too exotic for dayz but i mean like soft armor that degrades when being shot at and maybe let the players find inserts or maybe even craft them to combine it with the vests to stop rifle bullets like how you combine gun mods for m4.

if they are really lazy they can just make the current tactical vest bullet resistant and let us add stuff to it to enhance it

I'll back this idea!

People don't want high-end stuff, this includes armour. It should not offer enough protection that you can shrug off higher cal weapons, should have no pouches, and weigh quite a bit.

It depends on the armor, but any armor unable to stop 7.62 ball isn't going to stop 5.56 ball either. Blunt injuries are still better than having the bullet pass through.

Also even with plates damage can occur.

METHODS:

Eight anesthetized pigs, wearing body armor (including a ceramic plate) on the right side of their thorax, were shot with a 7.62-mm assault rifle (velocity approximately 800 m/s). The shots did not penetrate the armor and these animals were compared with control animals (n = 4), shot with blank ammunition. EEG and several physiologic parameters were thereafter monitored during a 2-hour period after the shot.

RESULTS:

All animals survived during the experimental period [...] Postmortem examination revealed subcutaneous hematomas and crush injuries to the right lung.

Also soft "civilian" armor intended for use against handguns won't result in blunt injuries from a 7.62mm, it will just go right through, same with 5.56mm and most rifle calibers.

Russian OMON(SWAT) wear vests that are perfectly capable of stopping AK-47 rounds, while being soft. Those do cause blunt trauma when impacted, which is usually counteracted by layered vests. I do not speak for US law enforcement.

I hope they do include it but it comes with negatives.

First of all I hope the game has Ceramic plate carriers so the ballistic vest will stop a limited number of rounds before being rendered useless.

The plates are also quite heavy so perhaps slower movement speed and or more fatigue for players outfitted with such clothing.

It makes perfect sense to have self made armor in the game, even military grade stuff that you can find. You can always balance armor by making the wearer get tired faster, be less agile, and move slower. Still, getting shot in the chest from a rifle, while wearing armor, should still render you unconscious. Even a 9mm should be able to take down a grown man - not killing him.

You need to consider the fact that Hall has his "deterioration" in-game with items. In my opinion, if there were to be some form of armor it would only stop the smallest of rounds, distance may also come into play. And of course, shooting someone wearing a vest will break it. In-case people haven't realised, if I stand with my back against a wall and someone unloads a clip from an Assault into my "armor" not only will I still be hurt, eventually the armor will give. It sounds like a bit of a stretch to put it in, I dont see any positives other than "sniper missed my head and hit my chest"

In the Military we were issued an IOTV Plate Carrier. These carried Sapi Plates and were tested to stop anything up to 7.62 rounds. However it couldn't handle more than 3 rounds at different points in the plate itself. In todays world more and more body armour has been researched. The best so far is something called "DragonSkin", it would stop wave after wave of anything up to 7.62.

They are firing an M14 at it.... That's about as powerful as 7,62 gets from close range. DragonSkin stops anything including 7.62 :D

I can agree with a simple sort of protection, Dragonskin is overkill. Way overkill.

Just cause it exists, doesn't mean it should be in there. If Dragonskin aromor is put in the game I will be first in line to ask the dev team for an ICBM.

There are different levels of body armour. Ceramic SAPI plates like the ones I wore on tour are designed and tested to stop 5.56 point blank, and 7.62×39 (AK47 family) from 100m. 7.62x54mm is a much faster, more lethal round. This is why the DMR, M14, etc, are more powerful than AK47s in ArmA. In fact, they fly SO fast, that upto 400m, the path of that round will never be more that 4 feet high. This is why you want to place a GPMG low to the ground. Up to 400m, everything dies.

Bam. Sorry for going all 'theory of machine gun fire' on you, but it's late, and there are all sorts of people saying some wierd shit.

EDIT: I can 100% confirm that Canad8an/American plates will stop 5.56 inside 30 feet. Friendly fire is a hell of a thing, and there is at least one guy walking around in Canada now thanks to his plate.
