Suggestion: Add instructional books.

Recommended Posts

I like the idea that in DayZ there's no leveling system required for knowing how to do stuff, but with that said, in some cases Im forced to check external sources such as wikis to figure out how certain things work (like the saline solution).

I think a good way to help players figure stuff out without hand holding them would be to add a series of short instructional survival books in the game with explanations on several subjects such as medical treatment, weapon maintenance, cooking, navigation and so on.

Whether or not reading these books would be a requirement to be able to do these things is something I'll leave up for discussion since Im neither for or against it, but I do think that if such an item were to be introduced it would have to be fairly common.

How To Execute OrLoKs Daily Moisturising Regime Vol 1

Slowly put a crumpet into OrLok's mouth to forbid him of any unease, then apply a litre of lotion and pour it over him. MUST be done whilst reciting "It puts the lotion on its skin" in Pig Latin, Chernarussian, and then Vietnamese. After the skin is smooth and LoK is asking for a new supply of crumpets, give him a mud bath in the dirt of a nearby graveyard for a ultimate clean mod.

This in the game. Now...

Good thinking. Make alot of books, and put them in special places : Medicalbooks in hospital, weaponbooks in military compound , cooking in farms etc etc. I would read. Then we should be able to have our own notebook to write down things we need to remember,(Need to loot a book and a pen first)  that can be looted when we die.

Yeah, I approve of this idea a lot. I can imagine a player picking up a book that details how to find the north star, or set up a stove and cook. Rather than getting +5 to a skill, the player actually learns something.

EDIT: Also, I would argue that the player can do these things before he has read a book. It shouldn't be degraded to 'find the book you need to transfuse blood' , but rather an ingame tutorial for players that havn't checked the wiki, or don't want to.
