Walking, jogging, sprinting.

Recommended Posts

Alright.

First, I know it's an alpha and therefor I am here just to either remind or suggest.

I've been an enemy to the sprinting for as long as the alpha has been out.
My friends just sprint across the map like santa claus on speed. It really, really DESTROYS the feeling and meaning of this game, to me.
I know, this will probably change in the long run, but I just feel that this is gamebreaking, actually.
Really gamebreaking.

You sprint faster than a car, you never get tired. The only negative effects of it is that you get thirsty and hungry faster and that your aim is bad... But really, it's not enough.
You lose half the game when sprinting across the map. You lose the eerie feeling of the forests, you lose the long trips, and there is really no hard work at all.

It's like 1. Sprint across the map.
            2. Find a gun, find food and water.
            3. Sprint everywhere.
And no one has a chance of either killing you or stealing your things.

I think that sprinting should be somewhat of a 20-30 second to 1minute sprint, depending on what you are carrying, and when you get tired your jogging should be lowered to a slow jog.
If you keep sprinting your character should start vomiting and then passing out.

Today I was sneaking up on a village. Out of the corner of my eye I spot a player sprinting along the road like a f******* train, and that got me here today, whining about this.

First step towards realism is to take care of players unlimited stamina.

In my opinion not only sprint should have duration and cooldown but jogging too.

If I sprint on the open field, it feels very dangerous, because I know, that I could shoot a sprinting guy on an open field without a problem.

So I decide to stay stealth in cover and just sprint, if I have to switch the cover.

Yes, you shouldn't be able to sprint that long, but I don't think, it feels gamebreaking, because it is very essential for crossing areas without any cover and must be used in emergency cases.

Oh shit, Frosti.
Taking away jogging would be so hardcore that even my core that is so hard it breaks hardcore metal into pieces would split into molecules.

I've tried walking across the map.
It gets pretty boring after two minutes.

Khad: Yes, therefor you should be able to sprint BUT get very tired after a short period of time, just like in real life.

thankfully this isn't a simulation game.

Actually, I think it somewhat is Gerandar.

I think it somewhat is...

you can think what you want but the games description doesn't mention anything about being a simulation game.

I've noticed that if you de-equip your chap so that his hands are free he can run like a rocket*. I assume it's been added in for debugging purposes, so that the players can explore the map in a reasonable timescale. It's as if the short-range sprint from the mod has been permanently activated. It would presumably be an easy fix. I can't wait for them to add all-terrain skateboards, or a hoverboard.

I'm in two minds as to the merits of being stealthy or just pegging it across the map. It seems to me that a player sprinting through the woods is just as hard to kill as somebody carefully crawling from bush to bush. Unless he's running directly towards you he will be a difficult target. Perhaps they could make it so that you could only sprint on concrete or stone, and if you try it in a forest or on muddy ground you twist your ankle.

* Obviously not literally like a rocket. Rockets don't run.

Hahahahaahaha, what's your definition of "long"?

I actually like this. You should be able to jog for as long as you want but sprinting should be tied directly to your health.

If you're on full health and full blood, you can sprint for maybe 60 seconds. Any longer and you start some messages:

  • I feel exhausted
  • My legs hurt
  • I feel like I'm going to throw up
  • I'm going to throw up.

If you're sick or have a broken leg (reduced Health), the amount you're able to sprint is reduced drastically, like only a few seconds. Enough to sprint from cover to cover, not long distances.

I like this!

Then you could have use for doping drugs too.

Add random chance of heart attacks to this.

Removing sprint or making it the CoD style(supersoldiers who can run for 10 seconds) is not a good idea. Just have it so you do get tired from sprinting after a few minutes, BUT only do this AFTER vehicles are added.

I wouldn't mind this actually I rarely use sprint or even full standing running often, the thought that my back should be sore from running half the map in a crouched position crossed my mind and I find myself taking breaks whenever my guy sounds exhausted, even sit down and have a munch adds to the experience, so even if this was added wouldn't affect me at all.

Well, at least now there is some 'mechanic' involved, compared to the MOD (save Epoch, that was actually pretty good with encumbrance/running). I believe Rocket has stated an encumbrance system will be implemented. From the MOD to now, there is far more authenticity to running than was then. Adding the encumbrance in and well, I think we will be as authentic as a game can be (I hate the words realistic, or any variation as 'realism' goes out the door with 'zombies').

Well, I personally I've been trying to walk most of the time on my latest character, only jogging here and there if in good shape. My food and water consumption is actually really good (almost life like for such activities) and character been in healthy state for days now, travelling around the map. I can also sprint and run for a good time before even having any real breathing issues, which is nice in a pinch.

I'd be in favor of something making walking and jogging the most used human travel means, especially once vehicles and other features are introduced. Most trained people can fast walk/jog for a very long time even with a load on their back though and I think we can consider the character in DayZ as somewhat trained.

The concept of energy is there so that's nice and you can "top off" with sodas, but there should be some toll after some time when the "sugar rush" is gone. Your energy/food level should also be more disconnected from the "full stomach" state. As it now, it feels very gamey, bit like a can of sardine is a powerup or something :)

Sprinting should of course be there, but having tons of loot, weapon and whatnot should take a heavy toll on anyone sprinting for a long duration.

Overall, it'd make the map feel bigger, travelling have MUCH more meaning and vehicles become really vital if you want mobility. Without vehicles and the like however, it wouldn't be very interesting I think.

I see all of your points, everyone.
I just feel that people sprint from one side of the map to the other, stop and shoot random dude in the face... and it's turning me off a bit. But just a bit... I'm in love with this game.
If this game is about survival then sprinting should be "last option" or more like "use when needed".
Jogging should be left kind of where it's at, as the game would be considered too hardcore if you'd have to walk everywhere.

Really looking forward to see what this game will become!
