Question About Video Cards and Settings

So in the video settings (can't remember excactly where it is off the top of my head) the highest options to select video memory are 2GB and Auto. I have a 4GB video card, and I'm wondering what I can do to optimize the extra memory. The reason I'm asking this is because I get better frames on the 2GB setting than Auto, and I really want to use the other 2GB. Also, will there be future support for higher memory solo video cards (such as 4GB)?

I to have a 4gb card but have never seen more than 2gb of the ram used in a game...{well apart from the fook loadsa mods i run in skyrim} I use it for video editing
