You have to be in audible range.

audible range= when players can hear your voice.

Stuff happens way to quick in DayZ for text based chatting. You could be halfway through your first sentence and *bang* you've been shot by someone you didn't see because your controls were locked down by typing mode.

 

Plus, most people just don't want to deal with typers, since it takes forever to communicate.

I had some direct text pop up the other night saying "don't move or I will shoot", "hit / to respond".  I just started running and replied on my mic " not falling for the cant move cause my chat box is open!"  Turns out he was in a bush behind me with a fire axe, but he did not follow when he saw the .45cal.  So yes it works.
