Did I do the right thing?

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

Okay... I did a bad thing... from a moral stand point but the right one from a survivalist one... I think... maybe. I still feel bad...

The short version is: I hopped on a low pop day server... some how... and was free to loot the tent base near the shore-side airfield. After which I was loaded up. Four water bottles... all empty... but ready for a refill. A M4 with a cqc stock, a damaged but upgraded front grip and a damaged sight. Two 40 round mags.... ect. Anyway I made my way to the field next... scoped it out and decided on the radar tower first... to get a lay of the land and scope out any players incoming.

I get to the top and notice a empty mountain pack.... already had one and continued to the walkway... looked around and suddenly heard the sound of a m4 being loaded. I turned and there was a guy swapping his pack with the empty one in the center of the control room. He didnt see me... so... I... shot him in the back. I felt like a real asshole... but so far I have been betrayed a few times... and this guy had a loaded gun!

Thinking back.... I could of held him up... told him to walk away as I kept him in my sights from the tower... but I panicked... so far... after playing and dying for various causes... about a dozen times.... I have yet to use a gun on anything... never saw a firing animation yet.... and all I was thinking was: I'll be damned if I get shot in the back for trusting again.

I feel bad, though... and doubt I will do that again. On a side note: It is amazing how such a simple game can inspire such survivalist instincts... fear of death... even in game... has got me acting totally out of charecter. Can't wait for a finished product. So... what should I have done? Was I dead wrong... like I feel I was?

Thanks,
super

If your first gut feeling was killing him then I see no problem, when in doubt shoot to kill.

Thanks guys... but how would you have handled a "diplomatic" engagement? Are there unspoken rules the community is guided by? Say I did not fire... what should I have done?

Tell him to not move and drop his weapon, if he even tried to turn around shoot him.

You did the right thing!

There are 2 types of Dayz players.

Survivors & Those collecting items to hand over to the survivors (formally known as Doormats)

I normally get behind them, if they have a weapon out I ask them to holster it and not to turn around or one (team) will take him out if he makes a sudden move. If its a whole team we mostly just follow them till they go in a house and take them out when they are leaving the building.

Nah, if he loaded his gun he could've been a big threat. I tend to tell people to drop their weapon and run away, if they don't comply, I shoot them. But at a place like Balota, you should not wait for a reaction, if the threat carries a gun. Just don't kill fresh spawns without a firearm and you're (in my eyes) a good survivor.

It is interesting that the community response was favorable towards my behavior... this game really is one of a survivor's... brutal.

I am pumped to get home and and explore a bit more... now that I am well armed... I need to seek out food and water.

Armed players are a threat, that's that. You could have held him up, but at a place like Balota you never know if he has a team nearby, and you just don't know if he/they could be hostile. Be the first one to shoot in situations like that, always.

Hell the other day I tried to hold up a guy at NWAF by telling him to drop the weapon and surrender, but rounded a corner and found another player drinking, scared the living shit out of me as they were both armed I lost it and just opened fire on them both. lol. Whoops.

I'm not a KoS player. Actually I jsut started playing DayZ friday when I picked up the SA on steam. But I quickly learned that anyone with a weapon os a threat. "Hey, I'm friendly"... not a chance jack.. you stay over there and I'll stay here.. I have met 1 person the whole time that was genuinely friendly.. he helped me out a bit and even let me follow him around for a little while the first day I played.

I usually play with guys I know froma  different game, we have our own TS server and everything. If you are not one of them, you're a threat and if you seem to be posing a threat, you'll be shot. Having a loaded weapon is "posing a threat" to me.

The only people I have let go since I obtained a firearm was a fresh spawn who didn't even have a melee weapon.. after we killed his friend for swingin his axe at us..

Most survivors are extremly awkward and rather startled when the diplomacy begins. If you can act a little bit, you can make it more fun by telling them what to do.

I have two examples.

I was in the northwest in a small town. I was fighting a zombie inside a house, I killed it, and without thinking I walked out of the door. Right in front of me were two armed guys, using the waterpump. I had the upperhand and could have killed them both. I was cornered, and my only way out was passed them because of a wall. I aimed my gun at them, realised they did not see me and I quickly retreated into the house and waited until they left.

If they would have seen me I would have shot at them, for my own protection.

Example 2, I was approaching a town, and in front of me, out of nowhere, came a guy, he did not see me, but I did see him. I was slightly in the woods, so he wouldnt really see me, nor be able to instantly kill me. So I called out to him with voice chat, we talked and looted the town together.

Here is a pic.

I could have just shot this guy and taken his loot, but he was no threat to me, killing him ruins this game. If you feel like killing folk, at least talk to them before you do it.

You did the right thing.

It was a low pop server he was not their when you went up so the sound of a gun being loaded means he just spawned in.

Most likely ghosting/server hoping for loot.

If you felt bad about killing him then that is a great thing. Not many of the DayZ players can say that. The best thing to do in this situation would have been to walk away, since you seemed to have everything you needed and you were doing fine without having to kill him.

This...thats what i would do...but anyways its ok, your actions were reasonable in that situation...

I always give them a chance. Directional chat is simply the best tool for diplomacy because bullets = time. If I can get him to holster his weapon and walk in the opposite direction to me without him knowing where I am, then that's the best encounter I can have in this game. Even if I drop off perishables for a new player, I make sure their hands are in the air and they don't move as I'm just too paranoid to trust anyone I'm not in constant voice comm's with. Doesn't make me shoot on sight, because I don't need to. In your situation it was a pretty easy choice, he was a very relevant threat and that threat needed to be removed. I'd have shot him too, if I were in that situation and I ALWAYS feel bad for killing someone as I'm a genuinely nice guy but survival is paramount. Unless, you know, they're dicks.

Also remember to play as a duo or more, you are less likely to get shot if playing with others that you trust.

@FrankieG

To be fair, he didn'y say he was server hoping, just that he lucked in on finding an untouched area on spawn. Sounds like a v. lucky respawn is all.

@superFluidity

The guy jumped you. What can I say. You were tooled up, but this guy comes charging in also tooled up, and he probably wasn't going to give you an easy out. Now if he was coming legit from across the airfield, then you can still manage a graceful exit.

But he jumped you. Better safe than sorry.

you did the right thing this was a situation that could not have been handled easily, next time if you are at a distance and have the drop on them hold them up and talk to them. Best way to do that is to hand cuff them first to make sure they can't do anything, then when you done and maybe traded some good let him go just keep him in your sight till you're safely away from them.
