i set my key bindings to open the map to "m", but when i do it it is just blank, do i need to actually own a map or am i just screwing something up?

You need to own one. As for viewing it i found putting it on hotbar worked for me, couldn´t get the key i bound to work.

Put any maps you have in the quick bar. That lets you view it.

You have to find a map. Store-ish buildings I know have them and cars can have them in the front seat and likely the back.

 

 

Maps work different here than they do in ArmA as well. You have to put them on a hotkey spot and use the corresponding hotkey. A full map might exist, I'm not sure, but typically they come as sections of Chernarus. So you might be in Zelengorsk and find a map of Southeast Chernarus, so don't be confused if that's the case.

 

I hear you can only use markers if you have a GPS as well but I'm not even 100% sure GPSs are in the game currently.
