How about adding locks?

Recommended Posts

Don't know if anyone has come up with this one yet, but I figured this idea could add a lot more depth, and possibilities to the social interactions in the game and a few of my friends agreed so I figured I'd post it.

I've come across a few containers (items that hold 6 items but only take up 4 slots) and why not add locks? Could be a built in lock on the case that you assign a combo to the first time you open it, or it could be padlocks or combo locks as loot on the ground that you can apply to said cases. If the locks have keys it would make it a little less useful but imagine if someone has to negotiate for your combo when robbing you rather than just KoSing you and taking everything.

Make it so the cases could be forced open with a couple items or maybe one specific item (possibly add bolt cutters for this?) but allow the chance for gear inside to be destroyed and the case to be unusable. Would encourage people to negotiate, communicate in general, and may discourage at least a little KoS.

What do you all think?

Doesn't really make sense when crowbars are already in the game IMO.

We talked about padlocks alot, the only problem i see here is that if it's supposed to be realistic, you could break a padlock very easily with crowbar, fire axe, gun, or anything, making it too easy to break.

I never liked locks. Ruins the fun of finding someones base.

Could use crowbars to pry them open... just need a crowbar, and need to be willing to carry it. It would be all about whats more important. Carry a crowbar and lose some space, or work on your negotiating/torturing skills and get a combo out of someone :) I still believe you would want prying them open to have some negative effect, damage the stuff inside/destroy the box.

If they could be pried open the fun would still be there. could be a whole method of playing. Hunting for bases with a crow bar vs. hunting groups or scavenging for yourself.

If you can craft a bomb/place an alarm clock inside a case then locks would be amazing.

"Here dude I found this box, its locked and I don't have room for it in my inventory, if you can find a crowbar you can get it open though, you might find something cool inside it"

[Moments later]

*tick tick tick BOOOOM!!*

or

*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!!* [all the zombies come a-runnin']

i really like this idea, if force-opening a lock was only possible with a crowbar. Bandits who want to take nice stuff from others will have to use slots for a crowbar instead of an axe. And since the crowbar is a little weaker, all those stupid bandits will get killed by zombies.

Or if being a successful bandit actually means a bit of sacrifice. Say, you could only open locks with a lockpicking set containing 2 items. Those 2 items will always have to be carried for a KOS-guy, if he wants to get all that good stuff from the dead body, which in many cases is locked tight in a box. I wouldnt be mad if a guy who actually worked for this lockpicking set was to take my stuff, since he earned it.

Oh! Final thought, you could use the locks to lock up gates. Delay incoming groups, force them to go around, or take the time to cut the lock, all while you may be watching for them. A ton of ways to expand the possibilities in game play. At least in my opinion.

They may just be a pain in the butt for the players who run into them but that's exactly the point.
