how do i put my torch into my inventory....

....so I can punch a zombie without opening the inventory and slowly dying while I fiddle around with dragging and dropping the damned torch?

also I do not want to drop it onto the floor either.

I think there are two ways:

 

One, hit the hot key button so the flashlight isn't selected.

 

Two, open your inventory and move it to your backpack/pants/etc.

Open your inventory and press the red x by the top right of the torch in your hands.

I believe the only way to get rid of things willingly is to drag them to the left empty tab. Pressing the little red X square will simply cancel usage of an item and gets added back to the inventory.
