Hear them talking

Recommended Posts

What if people were always broadcasting in direct chat, but only for a very small radius, like 5meters around them. While pressing caps lock would extend that range out to whatever it is now. That way people talking on teamspeak or skype would be vulnerable to being heard if they talk on it right in front of you. Also, if you're trying to stay hidden from someone near you, you'd have to stay very quiet or even mute your mic to avoid being detected via sound.

It would also have the benefit of allowing people to talk closely, without having to cue their mics or broadcast their voices out 20meters in all directions.

That has been suggested numerous times already and I don't think it's a good idea to force it onto people. It's their good right to use 3rd party programs.

it fucks the game up, i wish i could discuss stuff with other people using telepathy in real life.

If me and my friends want to laugh at each others expense, then y'all in-game don't need to hear that.

Right... I'm not taking that away from them, this would just make it slightly more realistic. If you think of 3rd party software as a walkie talkie for them to chat with their group, then if they've got me held hostage 2ft in front of them, I should be able to hear what they're saying into the walkie talkie.

Another thing this would do is force teamspeakers to use direct chat when in proximity to each other, otherwise there'd be an echo, which is realistic, you don't sit beside someone in real life and talk on a radio.

What I meant with 3rd party software is Teamspeak or Skype or anything that works for you. You can't stop people from using that and I don't think you should force people to continuously transmit through their mcrophone.

The reason for that is fairly simple: we had a bug where people would transmit serverwide and most of the time it was only them talking to their family, which is pretty annoying and I would hate to see a "feature" like that.

Perhaps you aren't reading my first post closely enough to understand. You would only hear someone if you stood right next to them in the game. If you walked away from them at all, you wouldn't hear it anymore. So, unless you like to glue yourself to the back of someone who's got a party going on at their house, I don't really see the issue with hearing a few background noises from time to time when you're RIGHT NEXT to someone.

As for the bug, yeah it sucked, but I don't think we should lose faith in the entire in-game chat system because of it. It was a bug, it got fixed promptly.

there will be no global chat.... so thats not a problem.

That would completely defeat the purpose of that function in the first place, then - would it not? The only thing comingout of it would be massive serverlag because of the bandwidth being used for continuously transmitting voice at any given time. The servers are already laggy as is.

they could still use those 3rd party programs though. this would just make it so any player in 'direct chat' range could also hear them

it would basically be removing the 'push to talk' function in the game. it doesn't seem as necessary if there's only 'direct chat' anyway

I doubt their code is that unoptimized. If I was making a game I would set it so it only transmits your voice if someone is within range to hear it. But, who knows, maybe you're right and it would lag the server. But, we shouldn't really worry too much on the technical side, we should just decide if a feature is worth having, and then let the developers worry about implementation.

It would turn the push to talk function into a "speak loudly" function to talk to people not directly beside you.

If we consider it's only being transmitted to the nearby area it will still eat loads of bandwidth. And the desync is already happening. You're right - I'm natrually taking a look at it from the technical side and I highly doubt it will be happening from that point of view.

I don't completely disagree with your point, I just know it won't make the performance better.

I had the exact same idea once. It would make the game more fair imo. People communicating over teamspeak/Skype kinda ruin the purpose of voice-chat ingame.

It might only send your voice to the server if the server needs to forward it to another player in range. But, who knows, I'm no programmer.

It will have to read it at any given time I assume. As it will have to check if there are players nearby. Which makes it necessary at any frame at any time.

It might know that you're transmitting at all times, but does that mean the server always needs to receive your transmissions? I don't think so.

^ This, until they add an equivalent option to the game. I looted a radio off a guy yesterday but it doesn't seem to do anything yet. Around the time the vanilla mod started to die FTC started experimenting with our own version including ACE and ACRE. If the radios aren't a copy of what ACRE can do or better we'll stick with TS.

It's technically a good idea, but rises some privacy concerns. I, for instance, don't like using voice activation -- I always use push-to-talk. I want to be in control of when my voice is transmitted and when it's not, in no small part because I have a habit of talking, humming and whistling to myself, and if I used voice activation other people would hear it and think I'm weird.

I definitely agree with you, I think the game would be vastly more immersive and, in some situations at least, enjoyable if everyone was forced to use in-game voice communication. Unfortunately, the game cannot enforce that without infringing an user's privacy, so I'm afraid there is no choice but to cope with the situation, or to look for a (roleplaying) community that discourages metagaming.

How did you jump to the conclusion that this would prevent 3rd party voice software being used? The idea is to work along side the other software.

Here's a video example of where this would make a difference. This guy was held up by 3 guys in a barracks, but he was on a 3rd party voice chat with his buddies outside. Realistically, there's no way someone that close could be communicating with people outside, without the 3 guys in the room knowing. Sure, he could queue his mic to his friends so they can hear him talking to the bandits, but as soon as he starts telling them which barracks he was in and how many guys, they would suspect something and react accordingly.
