People think server hopping for loot is part of the game

Recommended Posts

You need to find a way to heavily discourage or even outright punish players for doing this. It's ruining the game. I am unarmed, just trying to get lucky and find a pistol in town... and some guy with an assault rifle spawns into the same building as me and of course doesn't hesitate to just murder me flat out.

So many people do this it makes ANY and ALL legit play pointless. The only way to even play the game is to play this way, because of these people.

I mean, it's bad enough that murders are so highly encouraged by the game, and being friendly has minor benefits at best that are completely negated by the huge disadvantages.

This needs to be priority number one. Zombies can be avoided, even the REALLY nasty ones - cheating cannot.

Discourage murders, give them penalties and make it hard on them. Give more bonuses to being friendly / cooperative.

Sounds to me like this isn't your kind of game. People like killing others to protect their things. Server hopping is bad, don't get me wrong, but maybe you should hang out in the fields with the bunnies and sheep so you are more safe? Otherwise run the risks of the game.

There are always risks, and opportunities alike. Everyone chooses their own path for playing the game.

I dont understand your reply to him. He's playing the game how its supposed to be played and someone else who is server hopping pops in a kills him and your saying deal with it? How can you defend from this kind of player? You cant unless you log out as soon as you see him spawn in. I think his point is valid and your reply is go hang with the bunnies and sheep? Dont make any sense.

Yup, it's an awful exploit. Far worse than disconnecting to survive a zombie horde in my opinion, as it affects other players more.

I've been killed 2-3 times now by server hoppers catching me off-guard by spawning inside loot hotspots like the NW airfield barracks after i've checked it's clear.

Some will try and argue that the risks outweigh the rewards for server hoppers, but that's bullshit. I've tested it out myself and it's a ridiculously easy way of amassing good loot with minimal risk. Though I don't understand why anyone would want to play the game like that.. it completely ruins the element of survival and the excitement of stumbling upon good loot.

Maybe they should fix it so that if a player spawns into the game within a certain radius of loot (close enough to be inside the same building as the loot for instance) that loot should automatically disappear and not respawn for 10-15 minutes.

Server hopping for loot in a town? That would be the most desperate server hopper ever

You were unlucky, he probably logged out the day before and shot you because he feared loosing his stuff

Deal with it

No seriously....server hopping is used for Stary/NWAF looting, not simple residential buildings

Server-hopping to farm loot, Disconnecting to avoid death/Zs and server-ambush "login off one server to get a better postion on another then log back in Bang".

All of the above need to be priority number one, players that like this mod and want the experience that it can offer need to see something done about this....

Could have been someone "server-ambush" seen you go into that building..?

I think myself this mod is on a very slippery slope "a course of action likely to lead to something bad or disastrous".

Haha. Most people I see server hopping are packing NVG's, Suppressed Weapons, so they are already decked out with the works. Makes no sense to keep server hopping when you already have all the leet gear.

You want leet gear. Just sit and wait at Stary. It truly is that simple, someone will show up 100% of the time. Point, click, shoot, and loot. Then leave. Nothing else you can do. Server hopping is lame, do your part to discourage it by dismantling someone elses "hard" work.

The only time I "server hop" is if the server for some reason is night time even though it should be day according to the server description or I get stuck on the black screen of loading death =\. Don't hop for loot as that's just silly, and a good way to get yourself killed if you connect somewhere like the barracks and someone is there also :P.

The problem isn't just with loot. Once you have a good rifle you can find a good position in a popular area and server hop until you find someone to kill then once you kill them just keep server hopping. I think the easiest solution is when you join the game you randomly spawn somewhere in the wilderness, not just on the coast.

How do you know it was a server hopper and not just someone who logged out in that building the last time they played?

I could be mistaken, but I think this will be taken care of in the endgame. I'm sure I saw somewhere the servers that run the game need to have mySQL running because, while it is unused today, it will eventually save player information to the server itself. So, each server is it's own world. That's what I think I read at least...

He most likely was just logging back on.. there's a lot of assumption in this thread.

Server hopping for loot though is a problem.

Complaing about server hoppers is like complaing about "Campers" in popular FPS titles. It sucks to be killed in a crappy way but it will always happen. Just get over it, get some gear, and kill the hoppers :)

Hardcore cod/bf3 players adjust thier playing to adapt to these situations (campers).

If your in NWAF be alert and you may get some free kills.

sorry for referance COD..I know people rage about that.

And probably that.

Its almost a shame though, while I HATTTEEEE disco'ing to avoid death. Spawning where you log out is necessary for keeping a group together and I think adds a cool feel to the game. Starting on the coast / somewhere in the woods everytime would be extremely weird.

Server hopping only happens in the best loot (read: most dangerous) areas. Spawning inside these areas is extremely dangerous already as you are physically in the game before you can move etc., so while you can't be killed they can easily line you up and blast as soon as you move. I don't EVER log in buildings anymore due to the number of times I have died doing this.

It also adds to the danger of being in these areas as you have to constantly check corners and your back, even in areas you have already cleared, if this didn't exist it would be far too easy to just sit in a tower / barracks and chill. It should always be extremely sketchy, and server hopping makes this happen.

here is my suggestion...

Ask and allow each player an option to set 1 IP address as their *home* server within the game.

Players can choose/re-choose their home server once they are SPAWNED in the game via some menu. The home would be the default server you created your character for new players. All existing players default to the first server they log into.

Anytime you log into a non home server you will be first asked if you want to make this your home server, and if you choose no you can somehow reselect that ingame without any penalty.

So while you play on your home server you can log in and out with no delay just like how the game works now. So you disconnectors are safe.

If you log into any other server that is not your home server have the database store/check LAST disconnect INGAME times/date. I assume since they are updated constantly that it probably even stores the last update time/date and could compare it to the new log in time and date.

Compare the times to the new login time and if the time difference is less than 10 (this seems reasonable time) minutes make the player wait until that time penalty is reached.

example..

JoeDirtZ logs out of US Detroit #102 at 05:01pm 06/20/12 ** HOME **

JoeDirtZ logs into Atlanta #994 at 05:03pm 06/20/12

the difference in time is 2 minutes. Mr Dirtz has to wait 8 minutes to spawn into the game on the Atlanta server since it is not home and since it not been 10 mins. (8 mins is nothing)

So this doesn't stop you from server hoping, but it does throttle it.

tl;dr - throttle those biatches!

Being shot by bandits is just part of the game. Even the ones who camp with a sniper rifle. Annoying yes, but part of thengame.

The fucktards that server hop barracks to barracks should be dealt with.

Whenever there is a loophole people (fucktards!) will exploit.

How can server hopping for gear be stopped? I am sure Rocket and co are working on it. Maybe prevent people from aborting/spawning indoors and make all spawns standing up. That way anyone who server hops in the NW airfield is gonna have a shit tonne of Zeds on his arse as soon as he hops over. This will mean players will have to log out outdoors and have to find a secure location otherwise he will attract nearby Zeds on logging in.

It's a tough one.

I think if there were "no-log zones" it would eliminate this... You cannot log out in any loot heavy AREAS, and if you do you are ported to the wilderness.

This would just mean that people would have to run into the woods to logout.

Maybe a better idea would be to get rid of the mega loot spots and spread the goodies around more. No sense in spawn camping a loot spot with maybe one random item. I never see anyone server hoping from deer stand to deer stand. Or better yet, put the loot on the zeds in those areas so you have to kill them for the loot.
