Whats the real difference from the mod? You opinions please

Recommended Posts

So please write down what you found so far and maybe whats good and whats bad. [And yes, i forgot the "r" in the title]

The biggest thing (for me) is the new map - old terrain but lots and lots of new locations, streets and buildings that you can enter.

Better graphics and far lower (for now) performance.

Nice animations.

Very cool looting system, but not that much loot as expected.

(and only 3 weapons so far)

New weapon modification system.

Mhh... and thats it? Please tell me they did more than that in over a year now.

My personal opinion on this is, its a nice alpha game (bugs are ok in alpha status, i dont care about them for now[ofc report them]), but not enough stuff for - how long did they work on it? Still looks like some sort of a mod.

Main menu is still ArmaII stuff, they just removed the unneccessary parts and rearranged the others (wtf keybindings).

Engine seems to be the same.

Sometimes this feels worse than the mod way back in 2012.

But at the same time I'm impressed by the gameplay, the feeling of it. Its DayZ, definitly. Maybe the lite version for now, but Dean promised to change that soon. I hope he's right :)

So what do you think / found out?

I like it alot, it is a fantastic base for the game to build on. Honestly better than I expected.

The change of pace.

End game in mod, 3-4 hours then a bit of deathamatching.

End game in standalone more than eight easily.

No hacks from my experience.

The atmosphere of night is way better.

The shadows of the trees are pitch black, while you can still make out shapes on the terrain.

There's still a bit to go before the alpha is clean of bugs and everything works as it should (torch beams and buildings :/ ) but for $30 and even at under 6 hours gameplay I am immensely satisfied.

This is a game I think I will be playing for life.

You can walk up to a door, look at it, then click open and it actually opens ... without even breaking your leg!

The real difference is the character customisation how you interact with the environment/loot,

The stand alone puts a greater emphasis on SURVIVAL rather than just running for A to C while stopping at those red bricked houses at B (if you know what I mean  :P ). Crafting and weapon customisation is worth the admission price alone, I'd say.

The 6ft falls don't kill or break your legs any more, doors and stairs are no longer death traps and the animations are incredibly smooth unlike the mod.

Basically if you've enjoyed the mod and got through all the flaws it had you will absolutely positively love the stand alone

I find it hard to compare. The SA is new and in contrast very nice polish ;)

The mod on the other hand is old, sure new things come along (hello kitty suv... WTF). And is constantly growing.

(ALSO IN)

Gun customization i loooove. (pissed i cant attach my weapons flashlight). (Dayz Epidemic)

And the general crafting is excellent (Epoch / Origins)

The new locations i give 8 thumbs up (any admin loves to build)

Do i need to continue?

IMO tie alot of functions in these above mods together and you got the absolutly best game ever! Graphics brings a tear to my eyes. SA runs better on my comp the arma 2 :) Further more the access to area. Can enter 90% of everything, that is a sure winner in all categoreys for me.

This alpha can really be a lifelong game for alot of people. Myself included

Much better base to build on.

And that, if I like this fleshed out bare bone version of the SA more than the mod already, what will bases and vehicles bring this ultra sandbox to? Goty 2013, 2014, 2015

Playing in First Person feels so much smoother for me, I'm actually playing it 80% of the time, only occasionally dropping to 3rd to check my character.

I'm the same, I cant've switched to 3p more than about 10 times.

Does bleeding show up on your character in inventory?

Yes,  with the latest patch I got a red rectangle that said "bleeding" I think, bandaging fixed it.

Then we can remove third person.

The movement is much better, there is a FOV slider, I wouldn't say 3rd person is neccisary.

Even as a alpha it looks way better that the arma 2 mod and is noticeably smoother.

5 second load times, smooth and responsive controls that are better in some ways than Arma 3 and worse in some ways.

It's vanilla. I like vanilla. If I wanted TDM I would play something else.

No vehicles.

Zombies are sometimes a non-issue. Other times they are instantly fatal. It's very inconsistent.

The server-side inventory management causes a sometimes irritating lag before your inventory loads in game.

You can, at least with the M4 you need a different foregrip.

On Topic:

The engine. DayZ is now based off engine structure and not scripts that were outside the game internal architecture. This opens the possibility for many, many, many, many things to be done easily by simply modifying this, adding that, removing that, etcetera.
