City/Street Lights

Recommended Posts

When night hits, its a very scary time but within game there are a lot of street-lights etc laying around, I feel it'd add a little more atmosphere to see eerie street lights flickering about the world, it'd also help new players at night have a sense of location rather than being totally unknown, also in some of the bigger cities it may be worthwhile having the odd light in a building, even as much as candle light. This would make for a more tense environment at which you evaluate being near the lights and revealing your position against the aid of actually having light near you etc.

I'd like to one-up your idea. Clearly in an apocalyptic situation, there would be no one to run the power plants, and as such, no electricity on any large scale.

What if power plants could be repaired and fueled? Much like vehicles? Generators would obviously create a lot of noise, and therefore attract zombies galore. The power plant would also not run at full capacity, meaning it would only provide electricity to a specific radius (whatever that may be).

But here are the pros i can think of.

1) A good end-game goal (rocket has stated that these are lacking and he intends to create more)

2) A good team cooperation goal (there are few of these, other than now we have extra meat-shields!)

3) Cities that have been powered would be night-playable (though not impossible now, just terribly difficult without NVGs)

4) ???? Suggestions?

Cons:

1) perhaps not possible to implement in arma2's engine?

2) ???? Suggestions?

Repairing a power plant wouldn't really benefit the person repairing it.

I do like the street light idea though. I have too wondered why that wasn't in the game.

My idea hinges on the fact that it would be nigh impossible to do alone.

It would benefit the community of the server working together, if they wanted to work together to get lights working on their town or city. Like rebuilding a survival community, maybe building defensive structures will come in also so groups could really build a base of operations together.

Jesus - not only can we fix and fly Huey helicopters, fix and repair cars, give blood transfusions, fix broken legs with a single injection and hit a bobbing Zed head from 500m with a sniper rifle - now we can single handedly fix power generators.

No wonder we survived the Zombie Apocalypse - we are frigging brilliant. We must be Chuck Norris.

@Downside: Exactly!

@DemonGroover: did you even read my posts? And I quote, "My idea hinges on the fact that it would be nigh impossible to do alone. "

If you ever watched rocket's interviews on youtube, he states that he doesn't want his mod to be 100% realistic, just believable. Why couldn't someone repair a generator? Doesn't have to be a large scale power plant. But the main point of this idea is it would take a lot of parts so it could give reason for players to group up to rebuild a community and have lights. It really just gives more stuff for players to do.

I've already lived for days, fixed vehicles, grouped, soloed. I like more things to do and keep me busy within a game.

working lights within an area would be nice during the night , and the whole generator idea is a very good one. it should take alot of parts and only run for a brief time (maybe gas powered?). also the lights and sound would attract alot of zombies and players making it hard to maintain and hold , not to mention a big lit up target for bandits to try and steal for there own use.

im not sure if it is even possible to do , but if it is it would add a new dynamic to the game.

you got my vote

i like the idea of a generator. though maybe have mobile lighting instead of using fixed street lighting. also maybe able to electrify fencing for defense.

I like the idea of being able to turn on power to a city. Here's my take on it:

1) When the power's on, all zombies are in perma-aggro if they're within city limits. They REALLY don't like the buzz of electric lights.

2) Spawn more zombies in powered areas.

3) Spawn loot in locations that can't be accessed unless the power's on. (Electric-powered gates or whatever.)

4) Extra visibility at night from electric light.

Now it's not just an aesthetic look.
