Not having any fun !!

Recommended Posts

You could buy Arma 2 and play armory/custom map to fly about and get a feel of the map. It won't have all the new stuff but you'll feel the general layout of it all.

Good idea but i did buy dayz to avoid getting arma so i dont really wanna spen another 20 pounds.

Part of the fun of DayZ is the exploration. Having a knowledgeable guide player to point you in the right direction doesn't hurt, but there's also a lot to be said for just getting on your bike (or not, they're not in the game yet :P) and going to explore the world. The area around where you spawn is going to be picked completely clean, so head inland and find an area that hasn't been picked clean. The map's more than big enough for there to be plenty of stuff dotted around for everyone.

It would be just the same if you'd started playing the mod first - you'd still not know where anything was or where you were 'supposed' to go. Get out there, explore. FIND that map and compass and navigate your way to these magical locations everyone's talking about. And then go back there after you get shot in the face ten seconds after you arrive. I promise it's a hundred times more fun that way.

The problem with the game at the moment is you die so quickly, literally as soon as you spawn you get a message saying you are thirsty. And if everything near you has been picked clean you are screwed pretty quickly and thats whats annoying me, dont get me wrong i am loving the noobish feeling of pooing and spraying everywhere as soon as i see someone.

It's easy enough to find out where you are on the map. It's not hard to find the name of the town you spawn in (it's on the signs leading in and out of the town) - they're in Russian, but with a little practice and logical thinking you'll be able to tell which town is which, then look for a prominent feature that's on the map. My first method of choice is usually railway tracks/stations, but power lines and even specific road junctions all work too. From there, you can tell where you are, and everything from that point on is relative. If you get lost again, just repeat the process. :)

That's the thing about DayZ - it doesn't hold your hand, but if you're willing to learn and develop new skills, it's a fantastic experience, because nothing out there does that - throws you in a harsh, open world with nothing but the clothes on your back and says: 'Right. There you go, now survive.' That's what makes it great.

But that's part of the experience. EVERY SINGLE PLAYER who came into DayZ without a group of players helping them was where you are right now - they died a whole bunch of times to stupid stuff that seems ridiculous now, but every time you die, you learn something - whether it's that you can't really hope to fist-fight a zombie without getting a few nasty infectious scratches, or that the areas where you're spawning are also spawning a lot of other players and that loot's going to be hard to find in those areas. With time you get wiser and more experienced, and every time you live a little bit longer and learn a few new tricks.

No-one expects you to be surviving days on end, particularly in the Standalone, where there are a hatful of bugs right now. Thirst and Hunger and stuff seem to be pretty broken right now, so don't sweat that stuff - it'll be fixed in the near future. Just do your best, and don't get bent out of shape when things go wrong - if you've got questions or problems - that's what we're here for on the forums! :)
