Appeal to server admins. Re: Server names / name tag settings

Recommended Posts

Given the flexibility that admins have as far as difficulty settings, it seems that labels such as Regular / Veteran / Expert dont really have any meaning as they are all a random mix of settings.

What I rarely find in a server name (and what I look for in a server) is whether or not name tags are on or off. There are a few that include this in the server name but not many at all. Of all the settings, this one is the clincher for me.

Please consider including your nametag setting in the server name so that those of us who wish to play a realistic game where we can't see a characters name throuhg a building behind trees from across a field can more easily find a server which does not tolerate such silliness.

I absolutely refuse to play on a nametag server, but it is rough finding one when most servers do not indicate which setting they use.

Thanks.

I guess its not that easy. Our Server Name for example contains

Servername - DayzVersion - ArmaVersion - Crosshair On/Off - 3rd Person On/Off - Hosted By

As many other Servers. There is not much space left for posting all Options. But usually Servers without Crosshairs have No Names too. ;)

Suggestion: Find a Server with a nice Community to play on and play there regulary.

Tells you in the browser what difficulty setting is on.

Nametags on is like covering yourself in blood and trying to dance past zombies, why would any server turn on names? You can see players a mile away with it on.

This is how it's supposed to be (how I understand at least):

You state the difficulty mode of your server, then after that, you add optional flags which deviate from what that difficulty has at stock. So if you choose to do Regular, but you want crosshairs off, the server name should have [REGULAR CH:OFF] because by default in Regular crosshairs are on.

Now how many server admins try to follow that, I'm unsure of. I know a lot of people have been trying to get the right naming convention down.

This can be achieved with a standardization of difficulty settings.

Ie:

Regular has nametags, crosshair, et al.

Veteran has no nametags or crosshair, but 3dp

Mercenary has nothing

If a dayzdev guy can sort out the actual hosting rule set, naming conventions, and difficulty settings it would be awesome.

I understand you have a lot of information to convey in a very limited space but all we are asking for is a few characters (NT=Off). A more uniform naming convention is definitely needed.

I do wish the Expert / Veteran / Regular etc settings were more standardized since as it is, those labels are not specific to any group of settings. My suggestion would be to drop those ambiguous labels entirely, and simply include all the settings for CH= 3dp= NT= (there are only 3 variables, why do most servers insist on listing only two of them).

Many servers are still using the old format of "DayZ Zombie RPG -" instead of just "DayZ -" and some are just wasting space all over the place:

DayZ Zombie RPG - LU15 (version1.7.1.5/Beta 93965 Required) [REGULAR 3DP:On CH:on][GMT+1] dayzmod.com - Hosted By LazyAssGamers / Vilayer.com

vs.

DayZ - LU15 (v1715 b96935) [3dp-on CH-on][GMT+1] Hosted By LazyAssGamers/Vilayer.com

Plenty of room now to add a "NT=Off" now eh? I realize I am asking a lot, but since nametags on or off settings vary so wildly across all dificulty settings (even some Regular servers have nametags off) that I believe it would be worth including this short variable in the server names. Ultimately, given the direction this mod is taking, I expect nametags to be disabled entirely but in the meantime....

I think we can shorten it even farther with [3dp=1 CH=0 NT=0]

compared to: [3dp=On CH=Off NT=Off]

[3dp=1 CH=0 NT=0]

[3dp=On CH=Off NT=Off]

Yeah, 0/1 would definitely be my preference but on/off saves confusion. A lot of people who have never mucked around in a config file before have no idea which is on or off.

Do away with Reg, Vet, etc, keep it simple and generic like this:

DayZ - US 1 Chicago GMT-5 [3P=Y CH=N DM=N NP=N PV=Y WP=Y] (1.7.1.5/93695) Hosted By somebody/Hoster.com

I reckon time should be next to server location and version/beta after settings. Keep most important info at the front.

Makes sense. As it stands, reg /vet / exp mean nothing since all settings are interchangible between them. Weeks ago, there was a lot of inititive between the server admins and the devs to reach some kind of naming convention but since then it seems like everyone just gave up out of frustration in reaching an agreement on how it should be done.
